Although I'm completely biased, as you may understand, I think the game works very well with 2 players. Mainly because you have the tension to select your best actions first (as only 2 dice are allowed in each character) and also you have to dominate very well the timing on passing.
Pirate's dice can be even more mean in this format as you may use them as a second action in one character leaving your opponent with no alternatives but paying for the bonus, unless he wants to get some pirates for himself. So there's a relevant screw your opponent factor too. It plays in 60/70 minutes, easily.
We may have played the game more than a dozen times with 2 players and we really think it's much more than an alternative to 4 or 3 players, it's a format with its own merits and strategies.
