Derek Carver has kindly pointed me in the direction of the Toys R Us in Essen. It's a few minutes walk from the main railway station on Gildehofstrasse. This link shows a map, the station would be just on the left of the map.

Sisteray knows of another toy store...

Yo

Thera are a few gamestores in Essen...

Best are

Allgamesforyou on the Kupferdreher Landstr., they have a big homepage http://www.all-games.de/ but the owner (heinz) has a booth at the fair, so no reason to drive to the shop.

For Fantasy and Wargames there is the fanencounter at the Rellinghauser Str. http://www.fanen.com/ but the owner (holger) is also with a booth on the fair....

Toysareus are in the essen city centrum and the standard toy shop and i believe they have also a booth on the fair...

It's always worth looking at the toy depts in the big stores, like Galeria Kauhof and Karstadt. Also, Mueller has a great selection, and the bookseller on the main shopping drag reportedly has games.
