Be on your guard. There are older and fouler things than Orcs in the deep places of the world.

I'm in the area for a wedding, but it won't start until 6PM. Is there a store in the area?

Thanks.

Columbiana Mall out on Harbison Blvd. used to have a Boardwalk and Park Place, but I'm not sure if it's there anymore. I know Heroes and Dragons on Bush River Road is still there and I think there's a relatively new game store at the Downtown Mall (I forget it's name). When I lived there (many moons ago) it had quite a few game / comic book stores.

Boardwalk and Park Place is no longer there.

Heros and Dragons is on Bush River off of I-26, read NOT I-20, across from Ruby Tuesdays i believe.

There is also a Broad River road. It can be confusing.

Unless things have changed dramatically since I was there last, you can scratch Columbia off your list.

Boardwalk and Park Place used to be good but, as said before, they're gone now. Heroes & Dragons is RPGs/CCGs/comics. I don't even remember seeing any board games the last time I was in there.

I kind of hate to say it but you might want to just troll the local Toys R Us or the various bookstores (Books-A-Million, Barnes & Noble, etc.)

I can't speak for Lexington though.

Heroes and Dragons actually has a pretty good selection of new releases, along with a few oldies gathering dust.

Toys and Games Etc. in Columbia Place Mall in Northeast Columbia also has a very good selection. There also is a smaller Toys and Games in Columbiana Mall, but the pickings are slimmer than in the main store and I'm not 100% sure it's still there.

Hope this helps.

Obviously it is a decade late for Phil, but I noticed this topic is linked from the BGG list of FLGS and thought I would update it for 2018.

In addition to the game shops below, a local paper did an article on bars and cafes with board game playing about a year ago. These skew *VERY* casual though. http://www.thestate.com/entertainment/local-events/article13...

If I were to make a generic recommendation, I would just send you to Firefly, but a lot of the other places are building their own communities. I'm hopeful to see them flourish as well. It is definitely a great time compared to a decade ago when Toys & Games, Etc. was about the only place in town besides Heroes & Dragons, which, as I said below, is not really a board gaming place.

Firefly Toys & Games - https://www.fireflytoysandgames.com/
This is still the #1 spot by far for straight up board gaming. The hours are great as they are open to midnight most days of the week. Also, I would be remiss to not mention that they apparently have pinball machines. Probably the only ones in the Columbia area outside of a couple in a bar here or there. It has moved since 2012 to 657 St Andrews Rd, Columbia, SC 29210.

Pulp Central Gaming - https://www.facebook.com/PulpCentralCorner/
This place's old location was very small, but the one time I went in the guy who ran it was very nice. They did not appear to sell any board games at the time, but did have a space where you could play them. They may have had a small cache of games to play as well. They moved at the beginning of this month though to a new location which I have not visited. I still feel it more of a TCG, RPG, and video game spot than board gaming, but it is worth checking out. The hours are okay. They appear to go to 9PM each night. They used to be closed on Mondays, but I believe that is no longer the case. The address is 4046 Fernandina Road, Suite G Columbia, SC 29212.

Ready to Play Trading Cards - http://readytoplaytc.com/
This is not primarily a board gaming spot, but some board game playing will happen here. Also open to midnight most nights per Google. It is located at 910 Knox Abbott Dr Cayce, SC 29033

Games Workshop - https://www.facebook.com/GWForestPark/
I have never been. It seems to me to mostly be a minatures game shop. If you are into those, it would be worth checking out though. It is located at 4711 Forest Dr, Columbia, SC 29206.

Hobbytown USA - https://www.hobbytown.com/columbia-e-sc/l57
We have a local Hobbytown USA franchise. As of this writing, it appears to be in the process of moving. It was located at 10120 Two Notch Rd #5, Columbia, SC 29223, but appears to be moving to 326 St. Andrews Rd, Suite E. I think that is an interesting choice because it is just down the street from Firefly. It will be interesting to see how they differentiate themselves. I drive by the new location frequently, so I will try to remember to update this post once I confirm they are open. The owner was posting on a lot of Meetup groups to try to get board and card gamers into the store prior to their move. Before the move, their hours were kind of short, closing most days at or before 7PM.

Edit: They are open. There appear to be a couple tables that will be available to game on, but they are covered with shelving currently as they are setting up still. It appears an RC focused store is going on next door.

Heroes & Dragons - https://www.facebook.com/heroesanddragons/
As others said above, this is primarily a comic store with adjacent interest in RPGs and miniatures. It also has a complex history recently. They moved in the late 00s/early 10s to a new location which was bigger and housed a separately owned board game store as a sub-store within it. That went defunct fairly quickly though and I can't recall the name. Besides, that time, I don't think there was a heavy board game influence there. They then moved back to their old location (or at least that shopping center) back in early 2016, closed in late 2016, and reopened in early 2017 with a new owner. They are only open to 6PM Mon-Fri though, 7PM on Sat, and 5PM on Sun. It may be worth stopping by if you have adjacent interest in comics and want to know if anything is going on, but I doubt there is any action in the evenings given the early closing time. It is located at 1621 Broad River Rd, Columbia, SC 29210

Places you may hear about that are defunct and closed now:
Pixels and Pawns
Toys & Games, Etc.

Another store is That Computer Store, located near the Columbiana Mall on Harbison: 275 Harbison Blvd., Suite P, Columbia, SC 29212. It's in the shopping center a few stores down from the liquor store and near 2nd and Charles bookstore (it's actually right next to where Pixels and Pawns used to be). They recently moved to this location from one exit further away on Lake Murray Blvd.
That Computer Store is primarily a computer repair store but they sell Games Workshop stuff (40K, Bloodbowl, etc) and FFG Star Wars minis. They have table space for miniature gaming and run tournaments for Warhammer and other GW games.

Firefly is definitely the big one in the city though.
