Hi gang --

Much to my surprise & delight, it turns out I will be in central Suisse for a spell in September (but too early for Essen -- damn!)

Anyone know of any good euro/German-oriented gaming stores anywhere in Switzerland worth stopping by? I know that the $ exchange rate is pretty bad right now, but if I can find an otherwise hard-to-find title or two AND avoid overseas shipping costs, I have to think it will be worth it, eh? Especially since I'll have a Swiss Pass for free travel almost anywhere, coupled with a desire to see cities I haven't been to before -- a win/win deal all around.

Thanks for any and all suggestions!

Franz Karl Weber- it may be a chain of toy stores. I know there is one on the Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich (or was last titme I was there- maybe 4 years ago). It was where I first saw Alea games, T & E, and others, but I was not yet really interested in gaming and never got anything worth mentioning.

Prices probably wouldn't be good, but the selection was, if I recall.

Are you going to see Basel?

Beautiful city and there was a very nice store there. Prices were quite reasonable, considering Switzerland is a quite expensive country: got Chinatown (€ 30), Wallenstein (€ 40) and Vinci (€ 20).

DO NOT buy at "Franz Carl Weber". They are WAY too expensive!
DO NOT buy in Zürich, this city is WAY too expensive!

So: DO DEFINITELY NOT buy at Franz Carl Weber in Zürich ...

If you haven't seen Bern yet, I suggest you change that and pay a visit to the "Drachenäscht" (Dragons Lair):

www.drachenaescht.ch

very friendly, excellent selection, not exactly cheap but hey.. switzerland as a whole isn't... it's one of the "old fashioned" stores where they actually know the games they are selling (try that at FCW), they explain them and you may play a few rounds or even whole games if the store isn't full.

... and you might get to meet some of the crew behind the Fata Morgana games ;o)

By the way - I realize that Europe seems small to you americans, but Essen is still pretty far away from central Switzerland...

What Ben said. And the old part of Bern, where you can find the 'Drachenäscht,' is really worth a journey.

When I was in holiday near Luzern I spotted a game shop in a tiny village on the East bank of Lake Luzern (Vierwaldstatenzee). I have now idea how they kept afloat in such a small village

It's right that Franz Carl Weber at Bahnhofstrasse in Zürich is very expensive. Some time ago this store was renamed into "Kids Town". Recently all the FCW stores were sold to the French Ludendo Group. So I don't know how their range of games will change in the future.
But that you won't find any FLGS with reasonable prices is just a flameware between the rival towns of Basel and Zürich.

In Zürich we have 3 FLGS:
Rien ne va plus in the old town
Bitlis at Langstrasse
Jackpot at Weinbergstrasse

Hi gang --

Thanks to all of you for the suggestions -- I have been to Bern twice before, so I will likely go back anyway, and the DracheNacht is only more incentive to do so

Yep, definitively Drachenaest in Bern, or, if you're in the Biel/Bienne area,
Delirium Ludens : http://www.deliriumludens.ch

If you're visiting the French-speaking part, well, then, you should stop and come play a round with us...

Great list! I used it last week for my visit to Switzerland. Some more on the shops I visited:

Berne (BE)

Beautiful city, you can spend a few days there.

Drachen Nächst
Rathausgasse 52
3011 Bern
031 / 311 26 57
http://www.fatamorgana.ch/drachenaescht/drachenaescht.html / dn@fatamorgana.ch

wow The best shop I've seen! Great, great selection! Prices are not bad. You'll find games there you won't find in normal FLGS. If I hadn't bought that many games already I would have come home with Roads&Boats, Royal Turf and Indonesia as well...

Zwergenschmiede
Kramgasse 68
3011 Berne
031 / 311 61 66
http://www.zwergenschmiede.ch/ / wickiurs@bluewin.ch

Meh. Not for me. Fantasy/Miniatures. It's hidden away in a small alley and more a club then a store.

Bâle Ville (BS)

Spielbrett
Andreasplatz 12
CH-4001 Basel
061 / 261 97 41
spielbrett@bluewin.ch

Great toy & game store in Basel. Been there 2 years ago, loved it. Still do. Friendly, good prices, good selection. But after Bern, pfff.. Still great though.

Fribourg (FR)

Beautiful city, worth a visit.

La Bulle
Rue de Lausanne 66
1700 Fribourg
026 / 322 66 47
http://www.labulle.com/ / pascal@labulle.com

Comic/Toys/Game store. Nice, friendly, somewhat higher prices, not a bad selection. Quite a few French games. Not bad.

Lindwurm
rue de lausanne 41
1700 Fribourg
026 / 322 31 65
http://www.lindwurm.ch/ / info@lindwurm.ch

Bookstore. Did not see games.

Mix-Image SA
Rue de Lausanne
1700 Fribourg

Was closed when I was there. Looked like a fantasy/miniatures store.

Gulliver
Rue des épouses 8
1700 Fribourg
026 / 322 43 11

Closed. Didn't look like a gamestore to me. More antiques.

Vivishop in Lausanne is located just near the cathedral.
There is a medium variety of games, and the prices are high.

Another store in Lausanne is Franz Carl Weber, Place de la Palud 16, near the "lady justice" fountain. Few games are located in the 3rd floor. Prices are high.

Just to let you know, Le Maitre de Jeux in Sion has moved one block away, to Rue du Scex 45, Sion(see http://blog.lafetedujeu.ch/?p=375).
Unfortunately, I found this out only shortly after I visited Sion. Hopefully you will read this on time!

Another recommendation here for Drachen Nächst. It's a phenomenally well-stocked store, well worth a visit even if you're just browsing. I was expecting it to be more expensive than it was; I'd say prices are comparable to bricks-and-mortar retail in the UK (I appreciate that this is still on the high side, but it's not too bad given that everything is usually more expensive in Switzerland).

Hi all, and sorry for the OT blush
I will be relocating to Switzerland in the near future, precisely to Neuchatel.
Is anybody aware of any board-game club/group active there or in the nearby area? My French is a bit rusty but it should be enough to play

Thanks!
