I've been searching the forums, but do not have a clear picture in my head. Assuming, for the moment, that I could actually find any first edition staff for Battle Lore (and yes, I know that is a bit of an assumption), would it be possible to assemble a "Historical-Only" set (i.e. only getting the 100 Years and Scottish expansions)? Does the game explicitly state which scenarios are fantasy and which are not, and does it give the player enough non-fantasy pieces to paly battles with only human armies?

Yes it does and yes you can. That the beauty of this game. If you want fantasy, then you can put that in. If you don't, then you can leave it out. They even have an option (medieval lore rules) to remove the magic lore cards and play with those that could only happen in real life. That's good fun too.

Also, you can create your own historical scenarios using the fantasy armies that came with the base game as proxies. I've done that. I don't use the Lore cards at all.

I miss Days of Wonder's Battlelore online scenario creator tool and database of user-made scenarios. soblue

For historical battles, the two sets you want are:

BattleLore: The Hundred Years' War – Crossbows & Polearms: Crossbows, Spears, Halberds, Horn blowers
BattleLore: Code of Chivalry: Knights w/ Lance, Knights w/ Sword, Dismounted Knights, Crossbows

All the scenarios in these packs are historical, I believe. Code of Chivalry has rules for a medieval Lore deck without the very magical deck. Lore cards are played at level 1 and cost +3 Lore each. I've wondered if this isn't a bit restrictive--Samurai Battles has Dragon cards that cost no more than 3.

The only historical figures in Scottish Wars are the Knights w/ Lance, which you can get in Code of Chivalry instead.

I'll chip in this link

Official Scenarios
http://www.battleloremaster.com/adventures_official.html

There is also a bunch of unofficial scenarios.

Something you need to consider, the Scots are Dwarves and the Moors are Goblins.

However all of the scenarios in that expansion are historical - and good ones at that. They are imbalanced, usually putting one side in a difficult position, but battling out of those difficult positions are my preferred position when it comes to C&C games

Those scenarios can be found here: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/battlelore/Sup...

And all scenarios can be played on Vassal: http://www.vassalengine.org

So here's my question: how do you tell which scenario's are historical, and which are not? (Since they all seem to have dates, etc.)

By looking if they have goblins, dwarves or creatures in them?

Goblins & Dwarves not so much, because they match the historical Andalusian and Scottish Armies respectively.

Creatures are a clue.

Probably the simplest tell is that they use Medieval Lore rules. Medieval Lore uses just the Lore cards that represent the historical possibilities. Typical of such cards are First Strike, Ambush, extra movement, etc.
e.g.
http://www.battleloremaster.com/adventures/official/a4/40a.p...
http://www.battleloremaster.com/adventures/official/a4/45a.p...

Fundamentally, most scenarios can be played in this manner simply by ignoring the War Council and Creature rules.

You can leave the Lore cards out completely if you wish, which makes it like Ancients to a certain extent.
For example

For a quick reference of many historical battles of the 100 Years War, try

covers off the main battles, but it would be impossible to cover every minor battle.

Coming back to a year old discussion . . . if one could acquire enough miniatures, would it be possible to sub in human soldiers for the Dwarves in the Scottish scenarios without any confusion or loss of fidelity?

absolutely.. and in many ways you could use the figures from expansions anyway.

Most 'normal' dwarf infantry can be replaced by human infantry, but would be marked as Bold.
Dwarf spear can be replace by human spear, ditto crossbow/arbalist troops.

The 'unique' types are
Clansmen/Highlanders
Bull riders - could be Medium cavalry with little effect
Bolt thrower/Canon
Axe dwarves - functionally same as human halberdiers

If I'm after only Historical games, how much would I miss out by not having 'Code of Chivalry'?
I have the Base set (x2), Hundred Years War, Scottish Wars Expansion.

Reason: Read a post said the FFG Chivalry are not as detail as previous DoW minis.
