I'll be in LA this week and was wondering where I could find some great boardgame stores in the area. What does anybody recommend?

I recommend checking out Matthew Gray's Game Store Database at:

I'd check out this thread, which has a pretty lengthy discussion of LA-area game stores:

In Santa Monica, I'd recommend:

Aero Hobbies
(310) 828-5264
2918 Santa Monica (at Yale)
Santa Monica, CA

Ooo you're asking the right man. I've been to ALL of them, and here's the low down.

The Last Grenadier (820 N. Hollywood Way in Burbank): Fair selection of Euro's, AH, etc., and if you like wargames, you won't find a better store this side of the Mississippi. P.S., if you go here (and this is my #1 recommendation), be sure to eat at Porto's Cuban Bakery!!!

KnightWare, Inc. (3709 Cahuenga Blvd): Small selection, but very nice staff that will play just about any game they have with you at the drop of a hat. Also, many open boxes to toy around with. But alas, SO MANY MINIS!

Aero Hobbies (2918 Santa Monica Blvd): I find them a little overrated. Good location, TINY store, friendly help, small selection, too many mini's.

The Game Zone (2302 E. Colorado Blvd in Pasadena): Pretty good selection, GREAT sales area. The whole back of the store is on discount right now.

And, guess what? THAT'S IT! Thanks to the GameKeeper's rise and fall, Los Angeles has a PATHETIC selection of stores right now. You'd find more travelling farther out of the city, but these are the only ones worth looking at in the cities you mentioned. ALSO, check out Rio Grande's website, and use their store locater for CA.
Good Luck!

Game Empire in Pasadena is amazing! They have a great selection, a very knowledgable staff, and a big gaming area with lots of events and game nights.

That's not entirely true, Emerald Knights is a couple blocks from the Grenadier. Probably doesn't have quite as good a selection (though it's not terrible) and their staff is WAY more friendly. Plus it has comics and junk if you're into that sorta thing. I'll second Porto's in either case.

Game Ogre in Northridge is a bit outside that zone, but not too much. I've only been there a couple times. Seems allright.
