I just taught my family how to play Terra Mystica on Sunday. It was hard to teach, but I think it was worth it.

What do you think about:

Top Ten Games That Are Hard To Teach But Are Really Worth It

(granted, it can be phrased better, but you get the idea).

Gateway games are easy to teach, but sometimes the medium-weight games are more fun. So something about the ease of teaching vs. the payoff of the heavier game?

a cool idea, but would be a hard one for me personally to compile, because i rarely find a game that i find hard to teach... blush

i'm not hard to teach games don't exist, because i'm sure they do, i just have a hard time identifying them!

hehe, and for my tastes neither of those would 'be worth the trouble to teach'

also, high frontier is hard to learn (from the rules) but pretty easy to teach actually, imo

This. I'd love to hear your views on which ones would be good. As someone who runs a group at the local high school, I'm always looking for options and opinions.

Yup, i think it's a great topic, but I'm loathe to do it because of all the stupid 'rahdo vs dice tower stuff' (what was posted publicly was only the half of it), so my inclination is to stick to more broad topics...

Oops, didn't know there was that going around. I have my preferences on who I like, and will edit my comment. Sorry about that.

Maybe an opinion list aimed for teens/young adults? Top 10 for 13-21 Year old's?

Generally dont' like sandbox games, so probably wouldn't have 10

Hmm, cool idea!

Hehe, can't think of a one!

Would never do a list like this... too negative.

Quote:
Top 10 theme/Horror?
Very few we've played because Jen has no interest in the theme.

Quote:

Hmm, interesting idea, but not sure if there's 10 great examples yet?

Alreayd done fav designers, and I've already got Feld, Rosenberg & Knizia on the suggestion list. Can't think of any other designers that I could come up with 10 for...

Board game related

Game accessories
Storytelling Games
Games with 'tug of war' style scoring (Technically scoring a point in a game like this is mathematically equivalent to scoring a point in a two player game with regular scoring, you're just tracking point differential rather than absolute score, but it gives a different feel. If you can't think of ten, then 'games with a tug-of-war mechanic rather than just for scoring)
Games with the best 'Flat art' (cards and board, etc)
Games with the best Physical components (excluding the flat art)
Games that need a reprint
Underutilized themes
Underutilized mechanics

Non-board game related

Foods
Cities to visit
Podcasts (not necessarily board games)

Then how about rephrasing it to be the typical board game designer question? Top 10 videogames you wish you'd made (Which might overlap heavily with your top 10 videogames, or might not at all)

I'm generally not interested in these, so I don't think i'd have much to say

Interesting idea, but I genuinely don't have 10 to call out

Already on the list

These really aren't that interesting to me, tbh...

Very cool idea, but TBH my brain doesn't work in such a way that I could come up with 10. I don't tend to think much about things that don't exist... i'm too busy enjoying the things that do

Same as above

I think non-game related topics would be a blast, but voters regularily vote them at the lowest possible level. Still, I'll add "Meals" because I can almost immediately think of 20 or 30, and it makes me happy to think about them, let alone talk about them. I only listed to 2 podcasts (Cracked & Dice Tower) so can't do that one, in my 20's I could have done authors but the internet has killed me as a novel reader sadly, and cities to visit... just doesn't strike a chord with me...

Hehe, that would simply be a list of the highest grossing games of all time so I could have gotten rich on royalties and bonuses

yeah, that's been mentioned before, and it a very valid one, but i'm a terrible person to come up with such a list, because i rarely get to replay games much, because i'm always having to learn and play new things... I could guess, but a 'top 10 guesses' is kind of odd

hmm, at this point, i don't have 10

That is a great suggestion, but requires a broader historical perspective on the development of boardgames that i don't really possess. I'd love to see one though...

Would be hard to narrow it to 10... voters be crazy! Plus, it wouldn't be as interesting a list for normal viewers.
