Well, well, you certainly have been busy during our time apart. You look quite a bit more formidable than when I saW you last, and that fancy sword of yours - very nice!

But, well, let's talk over here.

I've been hearing rumors. Maybe you've been running jobs for some less savory types? Maybe doing things the populace as a whole may frown upon?

No, hey, your business is your business. It's just I thought maybe you'd like to hear how this city works before you go out and do something you may regret later.

SCENARIO REWARDS

All right, so when you go out and complete a scenario, you should know that you're going to earn rewards. Most of them will be good things, but bad stuff may happen, too.

Firstly, most scenarios you complete will reveal new scenarios on the world map. When choosing where to go next, you have access to anything revealed.

Next you might earn some achievements, which help keep track of what story lines are available for you to pursue. It's true that you can delve into any revealed scenario, but if you want to play it as part of a story line, you may need the proper achievements.

This achievement system not only allows for a consistent story to be told, but it also allows for the world to be affected by multiple different parties. Sure you can go through world exclusively with a single party, but there are plenty of other mercenaries out there, hungry for work, meaning you can explore the same world with different groups of people.

You may also be rewarded with more gold coins, new items or item designs, which would make the item purchasable from the shop, or you could even increase the prosperity of the town, which I'll get back to later.

You could, however, gain or lose reputation with the town, as well, depending on the job.

REPUTATION AND EVENTS

Your reputation is sort of the general feeling that your average upstanding citizen has towards you and your party. Having a lower reputation might be good when dealing with Gloomhaven's underbelly, but a good reputation is generally better when dealing with polite society.

For instance, shops might give you a discount on items if you have a sterling reputation, or charge you more if they know they can't trust you.

Your reputation may also affect the outcome of certain events that can occur in town or out on the road. Every time you return to Gloomhaven after an adventure, I'm sure you'll find something interesting going on. And as for the road, well, there's plenty of bad stuff outside the walls to keep you busy.

In either case, you will certainly come to a decision point: participate in the tavern brawl or try to stop it; buy the the piece of parchment from the suspicious vendor or walk away.

These decisions can affect any number of aspects of the town and your own status. If you choose to rob an old lady, you may get some money, but your reputation may also get worse. If you choose to run from a pack of wolves, they may not hurt you, but something else bad could befall you in your flight.

PROSPERITY

Certain actions you take can even raise Gloomhaven's overall prosperity. I know your actions may have seemed insignificant before, but you're becoming a major player in the city now. With enough help from you, Gloomhaven can attain new levels of prosperity, which will give shops a wider selection of items and and also attract higher level mercenaries to the town if you ever need to recruit a new one to your party.

CAREER GOALS

Why would you ever want to recruit a new mercenary to your party? Well, you don't expect to stick around this forsaken place forever do you? Neither do the other members of your group. Everyone's got something they're working towards, some lofty goal for their career that, once they accomplish it, they'll head out of town - away from the most dangerous profession in the world - right quick.

I'm sure you'll do the same when it comes time. And the world will go on without you, but your absence will be felt. For every mercenary that heads off to greener pastures, new events might crop up in town or on the road.

Your retirement will also typically attract a new type of mercenary to town, so your replacement might be that fresh new face, or one of these other no-gooders lingering around the taverns.

And that spot on your party's roster, they'll be proud to fill it, given the legacy you left behind. Anytime a new face takes a slot on the team, they'll get an additional perk on their character sheet for each person that has retired in that slot before them.

So there you have it. I've guided you from the beginning of your career all the way to the end. I'm not sure there's anything left to teach you, but I'll always be around if you have any questions.

I'm sure I'll be working in this city until the day I roll over and die. I hope you find a better fate.

Your 4 lessons are wonderful summary of the game, written in an entertaining style. You simplify what could be complex content for some. Thanks a lot!
