Dameo rules: wiki - mindsports - ig game center

Signs used are '?' for a bad move, '!' for a good one, '??' for a catastrophe, '!!' for a great find, '+' for a win and '=' for a draw or an even position.
_______________________________________________________________________

Procedure
I will upload a new Dameo problem every week with the solution of the previous one. That way there will be two problems to consider at any given time.
For all problems it's "White to move and win".
Solutions are given in successive diagrams and for each diagram it's "Black to move" (unless otherwise indicated).
________________________________________________________________________

Problem #6.

Author: Leo Springer
White c5 d5 - Black a4 h4
This is a replacement problem because the previous one was flawed.

Here's problem #5 and its solution.

White a2 b2 c1 d1 e2 e4 f1 f3 g1 g5 h1 - Black a4 b4 c4 c5 c6 d7 e6 e7 g3 h3 h6

Solution problem 5:
Spoiler (click to reveal)

There were four participants and no-one had it right. That was no surprise, really, because it's daunting. Two participants suggested f3g4, but then, after b4a3 or c5a3, Black has a king and White has little.
Here's what Leo wove together:

1.g1h2 The key-move

1...g3x1K
2.hxf1

2...h3x1K
3.g56

3...h1xe1xe5
4.d1c2

4...hxf6
5.a23

5...a4x2
6.c2b3

6...axc2
7.b3xb5xd5xf5xf7

7...exg7
8.c1xe5 +

Beautiful! I couldn't see white's 1st, 2nd or 3rd moves but I managed to find the 4th.

You've said that no-one had it right, but what is wrong with g5-f6. Please, follow me:

1. g5-f6 g3xe1K
2. f6xd8K e1xe5
3. f1-e2 e5xe1
4. d1xf1

Six white men on a2, b2, c1, f1, g1 and h1.
One white king on d8.
Eight black men on a4, b4, c4, c5, c6, e7, h3 and h6.

Black to move, but this position looks losing for him.

The two black pieces on the h-line look very immobile to me.

4. ... h6-h5
5. g1-h2 h5-h4
6. d8-d1 h4-g3
7. h2xh4 g3-g2
8. h1-h2 g2-h1K
9. h2-g3 h1xe1
10. d1xf1

or what about

4. ... c4-b3 or a4-b3
5. d8-d1 b3xb1
6. c1xa1

or

4. ... b4-a3
5. d8-d1 a3xa1K
6. d1-e1 a1xd1
7. e1xa1xa5xh5xh7xd7

or this move that leads to nothing

4. ... c4-c3
5. d8-d1 c5-c4
6. a2-a3 a4xc2
7. d1-d3 c3xe3
8. c1xc7 e3-d2
9. c7-b8K b4-a3
10. b8-a7 a3-a2
11. a7xh7xh2xc2

I see many more variations on each of the paths, but none are winning for black. Can you prove me wrong?

Well, one can always hope. But you're right, I missed 3. f1-e2 (mirage mirage) and only looked at 3. d86 (or d85 depending). Thanks for pointing it out, I'll inform Leo about it.

Seems I'll have to find out the hard way how problematic a problemist's life can be. I'll have to restrict myself further to relatively simple and clear problems.

I don't think it's such a big deal if a problem has more than one solution.
Ideally there should only be one solution but my vote is that you don't shy away from presenting complex positions just in case someone finds the 'wrong' way to win. But continue to vary the difficulty levels. I like to solve them sometimes
