named monsters usually come with life points such as "+3 per investigator".
Does this mean that the monster gets 3 life points per investigator IN ADDITION of the life points written on its base ? Or in REPLACEMENT of the life points written on its base ?

For instance the named maniac Herbert West played in forbidden alchemy: in our game he was getting +3 per investigator ... And I had picked up a maniac base with an initial value of 5 life points ...

So does Herbert West gets 3*4 (there were four investigators) = 12 life points PLUS the initial 5 points written on its base so a total of 17 life points?
OR 3*4 = 12 life points and this is it ?

thanks in advance

We do "in addition to..." So if a manic has 6 life and then is played as a named maniac and there are four investigators and the instructions are +4 life per investigator his life total is 22 life.

It's in addition to. The final bosses can be pretty tough -- one can go as high as 34 hit points.

High-end combat characters can deal 5+ damage with a single action, so that 17 doesn't necessarily last as long as you might think.
