Negative Buildings

This one's pretty short, I've been recovering from being beaten up. Infinite Legacy should see its first game and I'll get a feel for just how far off the mark the first version is (and it's always very far off the mark - that's how these things roll)

Ah, don't worry. I was speaking metaphorically - I was feeling beaten up - all that's happened in reality is that I was ill for a few days.

It's been years since I've been in a (real) fight and I'm generally not often inclined to do the sorts of things that'd lead to repeating the experience (Though you don't always get a choice).

New Post:

Uncluttering designs

I'm trying something new in terms of talking about a specific problem we've been working through, using a current project as an example. Which immediately made it not fit the index because I didn't want to double list it under the SatW project and general game design. In the end I filed it under "Common problems"

Not sure how well that format's worked out.

Also the list is kinda intimidating to scroll through. I'm wondering if it's worth picking out a few to be "best of" to make it more friendly to new readers.

Two new posts (because someone forgot to update the index after posting the first of them earlier this week, not naming any names):

How the physical nature of cards impacts design

Initial Complexity: The first play of the new prototype

New Post:

Mr Game

This one is a review and a bit of analysis on an interesting game I was sent recently. It's got intentionally vague rules, which is a bizaare choice, but works for it.

Game design 2017

New Post, added to the infinite legacy section:

Improvements based on that experience

Which is a title that doesn't make sense outside of the context of the list - but essentially I'm building on the playtest that was in the last IL post.

This works pretty much as a worked example for complexity reduction, so it's a neat topic in its own right.

Also nobody replied to my last post but lots of people liked it, which I take to mean that you're (collectively) messing with me

Cards as randomisers

A look at how probabilities differ between cards and dice (Yes I know that strictly you can replicate one with the other, but lets assume people like using things in a way that isn't tedious)

Self Defeating Moves

This one's about times that games give players the option to make moves that they'll regret in the long term (and when that can be a good thing to do).

New Post:

Board Design under Components.

Somewhat an Infinite Legacy update, but board design is an interesting subject. I'm not sure I've really done it justice - I can imagine this being a post I come back to and want to expand on down the line.

New Post:

How many cards does a card deck have? under Components.

A card deck would deck no amount of cards, for a card deck can't deck cards.
If a card deck could deck cards, how many cards would a card deck deck?
A card deck would deck no amount of cards, for even if a card deck could deck cards, why would the card deck deck cards?
If a card deck could deck cards and would deck cards, how many cards would a card deck deck...

I am in a strange mood this afternoon.

New post: What's wrong with me?

An explanation of where I've been for the last few weeks, written as something to link back to when looking for support on future projects.

Don't worry btw - I'm recovering well enough and will be fine in a week or two. I can already sit in a chair and type and everything.

Fantastic! I just skimmed the first entry, and it's interesting to see how Kickstarter has changed and not changed. "Boobies" just doesn't get the pass it used to.

I'm looking forward to digging through the archives.

Thanks!

It didn't really occur me to that I was in the process of building a historical corpus of how platforms and gameplay design ideas are evolving but I suppose it's that too. Maybe I should occasionally revisit an old topic and write a follow up if things have changed (either in the industry or in how I think about it with a little more experience)

Glad you like it, hope you enjoy them

Wow, very valuable resource here. I've read 8 or so and have already been challenged on numerous points. I've actually started a word doc to compile all the things that keep jumping out at me.

I look forward to digging into the rest! Thank you good sir for posting this.

No problem, glad you're finding it helpful

Also feel free to challenge me on things. I am wrong about stuff all the time (It is most obvious when I read posts from over a year ago and think "What! None of that is true, past me is an idiot") and it's good for me to get a notion of where that is

One card Two choices

All about cards that let you do more than one thing. Also that not-cards can do that happily too, but mostly it's about cards.
