My opinion:
Hasbro is awful, when it comes to board games. I really feel their game division knows nothing about gaming, but rather exploits current trends without knowing what makes the trends. Mattel at least has a German division that tries to make new games: Ghost Fightin' Treasure Hunters comes to mind.

Hasbro has Pie Face.

I just don't think the news is relevant for designer board games. Neither of the companies are.
For Barbie, Hot wheels & Fisher-price it may be relevant (& indeed, we may see 3 new versions of Monopoly/Cluedo etc, etc)

I lose count the amount of times I see non-gamers in my Facebook wall posting videos showing that game.

The actual big investment banker/capital groups that own BOTH Hasbro and Mattel are already about 60% of the same firms -- this take-over would merely make it official.

Strange to say that Mattel is slumping, when it is still a $5B a year company.

(But also, these kinds of stories pop up every few years about one or the other taking over the competition).

Circuit City did more than $10 billion and couldn't avoid bankruptcy.

But Mattel makes their own product, so more of that $5B is theirs to keep than what Circuit City could.

Mattel has several huge lines, like Hot Wheels, Pixar Cars, and Matchbox, they are something like 70% of the diecast car market.

Pretty sure Hasbro and Mattel combined are bigger than the entire board game industry. Those are some damned massive companies.

Last I checked, Mattel does GW's yearly turnover in about a week of business.

They do outsource some of the work though. I worked on a toy line which was developed by another major manufacturer and then had the Hasbro label slapped on once it went to retail.

Well, they and MB were "awful" with boardgames before the merger, so I'm not seeing how things are gonna change after it. Asmodee's consolidation of the game industry has had an effect, but we're still buying and excited about retail games. KS gets the sh** upon on a regular basis, yet "second printing" KS pull in more money and have less risk (specifically purchasing that "good game that's not for me") than ever.

What company is "KS" an abbreviation for?

I hope this doesn't happen. And, I was surprised to see that Mattel was struggling. The only good move Hasbro made after taking over most of the board game companies was releasing The Queen's Gambit under Avalon Hill.

Mattel stock simply is under-performing compared to what the investing gurus thought it should do. In other words, they wanted more money than they got, so in a snit they claim Mattel is dying.

Funny that Mattel is still a $5.4B a year firm (2016 numbers), and they are "in trouble" -- yet Amazon outright LOST $7.2B on shipping alone in 2016 and no one bats an eye.
