GAMEPLAY


To begin a game of The 7th Continent, each player will choose a character and then collectively everyone will choose one or more curses they want to attempt to lift. Every character has his or her own Skill cards that are added to the action deck (more on that below) and a special ability they can use throughout the game.

Your goal is to find clues around the continent that will help you lift the curse(s) that you’re fighting. You’ll have one clue per curse at the beginning of the game, but you’ll have to search around the continent for more of them.

The most important part of The 7th Continent is the action deck. This deck not only represents the skills and items you’ll gain throughout the adventure, it also represents your health. You’ll be drawing these cards to explore the continent, to create items, to heal yourself, and to perform a number of other actions.

The larger sets of cards found in the game are the Adventure and Exploration cards. The Adventure cards include the terrain you’ll be exploring and the events that take place on or around a specific terrain card. Each time you draw an Adventure card, you’ll read some information about the location and then add the card to the board. The Exploration cards, which are placed around Adventure cards when they’re first drawn, represent random events or items you’ll deal with or gain before you can move further in that direction.

The majority of the cards have actions that you can choose to perform. Each action will tell you how many cards you’ll need to draw and how many successes (stars) you’ll need. The actions will have success and failure consequences, which usually include drawing specific Adventure cards. After you’ve drawn cards from the action deck, you can keep one Skill card for later use.

Item cards play a significant role in the game as they make actions easier to perform by lowering the amount of cards and/or successes you’ll need to draw. You’ll have to craft many of the items you get by taking specific actions (drawing more cards from the action deck). The amount of items you can have depends on the number of characters in the game. However, you can stack items on top of each other, making one larger item that uses every ability of the items in that stack.

You can choose to perform actions alone or include other players/characters. Sometimes working together on actions is the best option since each character involved can use their cards during that action.

As I pointed out up top, the action deck also represents everyone’s health. Some negative consequences of actions force you to take State cards, some of which make you discard cards from the deck. When you first run out of cards, the discard pile becomes the new draw pile. If you draw a curse card from that newly formed draw pile, everyone loses. You’ll win if you’re able to lift the curse(s).

The game comes with a save system that allows you to easily store away the cards you’ve gained throughout your current adventure. You’ll simply save the items you’ve collected, the action deck, and the the terrain card where you’re located and put everything else back in the box.

And that’s pretty much all you need to know before jumping into your first game of The 7th Continent.


PROS


• The designers of The 7th Continent get a 10/10 for originality. They created a new world with a fun press-your-luck exploration system.

• The continent itself is HUGE! It gives you many, many hours of exploring to do, and chances are you won’t see everything on the continent even after dozens of hours of constant exploration. That’s insane.

• This game system is very easy to understand. Once you know how the actions and the action deck work, you can start playing the game right away.

• It’s also extremely easy to set up. Seriously, all you have to do is create the action deck and put your characters on the first terrain card. That’s it!

• It’s very cool that players can easily drop in or out of a game. This is actually what we did throughout the first curse we played.

• The artwork is beautiful and has a consistent look on the terrain and item cards. Everything really does look like it’s part of this world you’re exploring.


CONS


• This game system is fantastic, but the quests themselves are just okay. The goal of the game is to lift these curses, but only a very small portion of the content has to do with the quests you’re on. It’s a great survival game, but we went into it thinking there’d be a bit more story attached to each quest.

• The downside of this incredibly simple system is that it gets repetitive after a while. It started to feel like we were just taking a bunch of the same actions and hoping we’d get enough successes to move forward. I guess that’s not too surprising considering how long it takes to complete the quests.

• There is a lot to keep track of in The 7th Continent. If you’re not taking notes, you could spend hours trying to track down something you’ve already seen. This was a big problem for us after restarting a couple of our saved games.

• Losing is never fun, but it really stinks in this game. You have to go back to the beginning, gather items you know you’ll need later on, and spend a lot of time getting back to where you were. To me, that’s okay in video games, but definitely not in a board game of this size.


FINAL THOUGHTS


The 7th Continent uses an innovative exploration system – one everyone in my group loves – but we were hoping for a stronger story. I think the problem here is that the continent is so large and takes so much time to traverse that it actually takes away from the stories the game is trying to tell. Don’t get me wrong, exploring the continent is a lot of fun, but it can feel very repetitive at times, especially when it takes hours to find any type of clue. I should point out that we’ve only played the first curse and part of another, so there’s a chance that some of the curses are more interesting than others. My hope is that they come out with some quests/curses that last 2-4 hours apiece.

With all of that being said, I think there’s something really special here. It’s a great blend of exploration, survival, and choose-your-own-adventure all in one box. It’s a pretty amazing accomplishment that must have taken forever and a day to create. I have a feeling other designers are going to be using/borrowing/copying parts of this game in their own designs for years to come.

This game was made for people who want to explore/adventure through a completely new and freakin’ humongous world. If that’s you, you owe it to yourself to check out The 7th Continent. Actually, since it is so unique, I think everyone should at least play one 2-3 hour session to see if it’s for them.

Awesome review! I'm already in on KS2, but this gives me confidence that I made the right choice as I wait!

I actually felt the island was small. I can still hold most of it in mind and I haven't played in several weeks. TO each their own.

I agree, it can get tedious. Also the characters never really felt like they advanced from leveling - would have been nice to see stronger persistent abilities to simplify some of the common actions to keep it moving. Something I hope they take into account with future titled using this system.

The world they've created is disappointingly small and yet getting through it is a chore that takes hours because you're doing the same thing over and over and over again with little payoff in terms of story or progression.
It's so slooooow and repetitive I don't feel like starting it again.

Have you tried taking an alternate route off the starter island? They offer ways to jump to other parts of the continent pretty quickly.

This is slightly besides the point I don't always start on the starting island, but I always have to go through the über annoying jungle and the time-consuming pine-tree forest.

Absolutely. I did start again and gave up after 3 sessions and downgraded my rating to a 3.
Absolutely horrendous after 50 plays, the flaws are glaring and that was going through a curse I had never played before.

Wow... I had to check your rating to know if you were serious or if you were joking (as a comparison between the other posters who gave up after 3 hrs vs. you playing 50 plays).

Sorry to hear it has lost it's charm... I'm hoping the Immortal mode makes hunting less of an issue.

I will admit that I'm less excited about the game than I was, but I'm happy to let it sit on my shelf until the expansion arrives and I expect the magic will return with new content.
