This was a reply to a thread about the Artful Dodger from over a year ago, with the impending re-release of the Artful Dodger box set, I thought I’d update this history and give it its own home on the BGG Artful Dodger entry.

There are two-version of the Artful Dodger: the Artful Dodger promo version and the Artful Dodger retail version (and in truth, two versions of the promo as well).

The Artful Dodger was conceived as a promotional item for the launch of Firefly: The Game. It included a ship card (on a thinner card stock than the ones in the game) and a miniature, with instructions to pull the required engine core from the Osiris Supply Deck. In the US, Alliance Distribution took the Artful Dodger promo and decided to distribute it via GTM (Game Trade Magazine). The issue of the magazine was given out at Gen Con when Firefly launched. Between Gen Con and their own distribution, that issue of the magazine sold out (and our understanding is that it was one of the most popular issues ever).

The exclusive distributor in the UK, 24 7 Toys, wanted to use the Artful Dodger in a different manner. They wanted the promo ship card and miniature packed in with game itself. As a result the card stock used for the ship card was the same as the rest of the ship cards in the game. This also meant that the promo-version was available perpetually, and not as limited availability item. The UK box size was different as well. This design was later duplicated for the German translation.

Due to its popularity in the US, we commissioned a second wave of Artful Dodger ship cards and ships which we sold via our webstore to players who missed out on getting the issue of GTM.

This still did not satisfy demand for the Artful Dodger, so we decided to release it as boxed product. This retail version of the Artful Dodger contained a ship card on standard cardboard stock and a ship miniature. As a stand-alone product, we also added a dedicated starter engine core for the Dodger as well as the first color-coordinated ship die. This is the ONLY version of the Artful Dodger to come with a dedicated starter card drive core. We went through a few print runs of the retail version of the Artful Dodger then it was Out Of Print for quite some time. This product was the blueprint for the Coachworks releases a few years later, Esmeralda and Jetwash.

24 7 Toys is no longer in business. As a result, some of the UK exclusive copies of Firefly containing the Artful Dodger promo have made their way to the US market.

In early 2018, due to demand, the boxed version of the Artful Dodger returned to retail. Due to its inclusion in the Ship Dice set; this box version does not include a ship die.
