878 is a war game? It's a fun game no doubt, but if war gamers don't play something it shouldn't represent them IMO.

Partly surprised by Azul being second for game of the year. I would have though 7th Continent would have been there. I guess the mass of more people rating Azul won out.

Ultimately it is a popularity contest and 878 is going to get played far more than the typical wargame.

Also, based on ratings and people who rated it, Time of Crisis had to be really close.

It's just tough for a game to win a people's choice award when not enough people have played it. If the awards were later in the year, I bet you'd see Spirit Island show up.

Yeah, 878 didn't receive the most nominations, as I suspect wargamers are the primary folks nominating war games. However, once voting opens up on those nominations, it's more likely for a crossover game to get votes from non-wargamers when they look at the list and see something familiar.

I personally abstain from voting in that category since I know nothing about war games, but looking at the list, 878 is the only one I've heard of. So, I can see how some people end up voting for it, despite not really being interested in the category.

It's something wrong with The 7th Continent voting. Game has too low BGG popularity to take such high ranks in all nominations! Compare The 7th Continent' 215 players in February with other nominees' number of players.

These games' owners show very different BGG activity. The 7th Continent simply can't reach such great result (in Golden Geek voting) without artificial influence. It's statistics law.

Boardgames: Gloomhaven is probably well-deserved. Unfamiliar with any of the others.

RPGs: Tales from the Loop is kind of OK. The other RPG winners I either don't care about or am unfamiliar with.

Videogames: I had my wife vote for this one since she's the videogamer in our household. According to her the new Zelda is a disappointing suckfest. The only games she voted for that made the list are Samus Returns and Persona 5.

Overall I feel our tastes are very much not representative of the boards.

No doubt. I am a bit surprised that more people had access to some things on this list but that might just be the product of my game group having multiple copies of Spirit Island.

I have always been a pretty huge Video Gamer and I must say - the Video Game Geek awards are pretty much spot on this year. Zelda: BotW, Super Mario Odyssey, Horizon Zero Dawn, Cuphead and Samus Returns are pretty much the Top 5 games of the year. It's good to see them represented well!

I felt similarly about Fog Of Love. It's criminal that it somehow wasn't even up for best artwork & presentation.

Just be happy Gloomhaven wasn't nominated. It would have won best wargame easily.

No Lisboa? Pity....

Why isn't there a YouTube/Video category? Would be a worthwhile addition to the podcast category.
