I've found the 3 nuclear markers included with the game to be unnecessary. I wish they'd provided more high-value influence markers instead of the nuclear and event markers. Anyway, here's a simple variant I propose to make use of the chits:

US starts with the 3 nuclear markers. Any time a die is rolled, the US player may discard 1 nuclear marker to re-roll it.

In lieu of any other starting extras for the US. What do you guys think?

Those markers are used for indicating regions where coups and realignments are forbidden due to DEFCON.

There is a similar power on the official alternate Space Race track (Ballistic Missile). A player re-roll one coup per turn.
