Announcing The 2007 Golden Geek Awards!

The Golden Geek Awards is given annually to the best new games of the year, as selected by you, the users.

The "Geekies" will be given in the following categories:

- Best Gamers' Game
- Best Family Game
- Best Wargame
- Best 2-player Game
- Best Party Game
- Best Children's Game
- Best Card Game
- Best Artwork/Presentation

Here are the specifics:

In order to avoid voter fraud, we have adopted the following restrictions. Voting is restricted to either supporting users (having a supporter badge from any year is sufficient) or voters who pay a one-time 20 GeekGold fee. Anyone caught stuffing the ballot box will have their votes removed and be suspended from the site.

There will be two steps to selecting the winners.

First, there will be a nomination phase. Each eligible voter can nominate up to 15 games in each of the categories. The 15 games with the most nominations in each category will become the nominees for the final voting. You are not restricted to the list of suggested nominees - feel free to write-in a game by entering its number directly. Previous winners are not eligible for nomination.

The nomination page is here: www.boardgamegeek.com/geekawards.php?action=nominate

The final voting will resolved using the Ranked Pairs method. You can read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranked_pairs

For those who don't want to read the specifics of the system, users will rank the games in each category from 1 to 15, (with a 0 for no opinion), and, through some mathemagical computations, we will select the winner.

The nomination phase will run for one month (9/21), and the final voting for one more month (10/31). The winners will be announced at BoardGameGeek.CON 2007 in November.

You are welcome to campaign, discuss voting and nominations, etc, as much as you like. Let the awards begin!

Update: Microbadges will be awarded to participants.

Can I 'stuff' some "bell peppers"? How abouts a 'chicken'-->'goose'-->'goat'-->'pig'-->'cow'-->'killer whale'-->'blue whale'?

It's fun, it's healthy, it's good exercise. The kids will just love it. And we put a little sand inside to make the experience more pleasant.

Mr. Jack: The Carriage can be nominated? Likely because it is not marked as "expansion" in its BGG page...

You can nominate it - but since it's an expansion I doubt it will have much of a chance on winning.

I see my newest game, Aapep, is eligible for nomination, but the game isn't in stores yet and has only been at conventions for sale so far. Will it be eligible next year, since it really isn;t available yet for this years nom?

Potential bug -- Froggy Boogie appears on the list when I click on the "played" button, but not on the list when I click on the "all" button. Is this trouble? I'd really really like to see Froggy Boogie make the nominee list, and I am afraid it will be overlooked because of this.

The all list shows games that are owned by at least 20 people.

Can we maybe get a diffinition for 'war game' and 'gamer's game' in context of theses awards.

I know that I think of 'war games' as chits on hex maps recreating battles. But, from last year it seemed to incompass any game with comflict.

I am not participating (not enough Geekgold, not -yet- a contributor, not enough time to dedicate to it, not enough knowledge of the games published this year) but in the wargames category I have a sure bet of who the winner will be

Should be fine. We don't really set hard date cutoffs with the award.

I have an idea. I know you charge the 20 GG to stop spammers and stuff, but you could refund it after voting is done. That way people won't be stopped from participating due to the price?
