Re: Vassal module (v 3.4)
Ciao Miguel,
I agree with you about the quality of original module.
After more than 10 years of playing with Vassal I thoguht this could be even better with some additions (quite simple or small) without changing playing experience.

Previous saved files could be opened and used but without these new features.
That's because I'm bothering you all with this thread trying to catch all requests before setting them up again!
laugh

Roman numerals simply gave me an "ancient feeling" but suggestions are welcome!

Re: Vassal module (v 3.4)
I've posted in main thread a link with actual game module (WIP).

It's a Work In Progress but I would like to share it with you so that you can give it a try and help me adding new features or fixing errors and problems.

Posting the link also here:

- changed highlight color to be more visible and less "overlapping"

What do you think about unit pictures reflecting real block sizes?

For this I think I would stay with numbers on blocks.

Yeah, I think the game status (blocks, terrain below...) is better seen as it is now, I would keep the equally-sized squares for all.

One thing that would be great is when you mouseover a hex, the terrain underneath a unit is visible. Many times terrain in CCA gets forgotten as it is obscured by the unit.

Hi Grant, I've just added a "Hide units" icon to easily show the map with terrains only.
I think it should work.

This is even better than the mouse-over, thanks!

Also, bolder (or perhaps wider) bands of colour for the units.

Hi Grant,
I've tried to "double-size" coloured borders.
In this picture you can see Barbarians and Carthaginians units "boldered".

Waiting your feedback before proceeding with other units.
Ale

Yes, thicker borders will help a lot in some scenarios.

The highlight color for selected units is much clearer too. But is there a color that does not correspond to any of the armies? In the picture above is green around green... Although it is clear enough!

That is a huge improvement. Where it will really pay off is on the tan blocks and the pale blue blocks. Those colours get eaten up by the blue in the sky and the sand on the ground of the pics. This will really sharpen things up.

Just updated the module with "thicker" border for each unit.
Have alook at them.
In the meantime I'll try to modify overlay border to identify activated units... suggestions about the color?

Would it be possible to create a right click menu on the card deck. Then include options to draw a certain amount of cards and to place drawn cards automatically into your hand instead of dragging them.

Ideally one should look for some color that creates a contrast with the map and the colors of factions... maybe white or black? I'm not an expert.

Hi Brent,
I've already added an icon "hand symbol" in each player board with the ability to draw a command card and automatically put it in your hand.
You can simply keep pressing that button to draw multiple cards.

Ciao Giulio,
here you can see a preview with b/w border.

In this picture you can see it applied to all factions.
Please let me know if it works.

Those are not mutually exclusive, I believe.
Have blocks of different sizes, still keeping the number of blocks indicated.

Well, zebra pattern is surely visible. But I don't know if I like it... it is not particularly elegant, so to speak... Have you tried only white or only black? As I said, I'm not an expert and maybe some else has better suggestions.

Robin is right. I like different shapes but the elephant you showed us were too big imho.

I do believe white is too light.

Here you can see a preview with dark black border for moved / ordered units.

I like the uniform sizing in the current module, with numbers on the blocks. But with the heavier borders that you've adapted.

As for the highlight scheme, I think the green one works fine. Condusion about colours and which blocks belong to which side usually happens before you highlight/order any blocks.

Hi Allesandro,

I played for a while with v4 and the very thick boarders around does not look - at least to me - nice. The overlap slightly with picture and make the units slightly awkward. This is my personal feeling and what I always like in CCA module was that units were "light in graphics" but very crispy. The boarder takes part of the block and makes unit optically smaller.

What I like very much is new graphics for all the buttons - it looks much more modern!

Hi Michal,
I agree with you about unit appearance and thicker border.
I'll try to find a better solution and let you know.

And what about making a thicker border but only on the top and right? Mimicking the perspective of the 3d block...

About the highlight color, I had not thought of black but in your picture it makes very clear which units have been selected. At least much more than the old red, almost invisible on the red Roman army.

The Vassal ASL module has a small "Moved" tab on the side of the counter, rather than a full border.
Perhaps would that be a more straightforward and understandable way to mark moved units?

Perhaps having the hexes slightly larger would allow variant unit sizes?
