TWO IMPORTANT POLICY UPDATES : 1. Games Day is now totally free and open to the public. No more red donation cup! 2. You may no longer eat and drink stuff in the room (due to a policy change by the library).

Bay Area Games Day is a daylong open gaming meetup that has been running in the San Francisco Bay Area for 20 years. Our next event is coming up on Sat. October 20 starting at 10 AM and running until 11 PM.

We meet in the program room of the main library of the South Bay city of Los Altos, which is about 15 miles west of San Jose and 40 miles south of San Francisco.

We play mostly recent and classic Eurogames, the kind of games that are hot or ranked high here on BGG. But we also play many other sorts of tabletop games, including family games, Ameritrash, and wargames. Attendance is around 40-50 people, so it's easy to find players for most kinds of games. Here's a geeklist of what was played at our June 2 meetup.

We welcome newcomers to gaming, and families with kids.

Note that Games Day usually continues past the library's weekend closing time of 7 PM. If you want to get into the room after the library closes, you have to walk around to the large windows on the west side (the side facing San Antonio Rd.) and knock on the window until somebody inside the room notices and lets you in.

I plan to publicize future meetings sometimes here on BGG, and watch the forum threads. But the best way to keep up with announcements about future meetings, or contact others to plan specific games to play, is to join our Yahoo Groups mailing list. If you already have a Yahoo account or create one first, you can join the mailing list by clicking the big purple "+Join Group" button on our Yahoo Groups Web page. If you don't want to create a Yahoo account, you can still join the mailing list by sending an email to gamesday-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

I'm obviously not in your "catchment", but I suggest (after having the local libraries ban all community activities from community rooms), that you have the donation can out, clearly labeled as, "For Games Day," "50/50 [or whatever] between the Library and Games Day," or "Donate to the library, whose community room makes this game day possible."

Again, speaking as one whose library banned all Community activities from Community rooms.

Of course, talk to your library contact about what they would prefer.

We used to have a donation cup, clearly labelled as such, to collect donations to pay the room rental fee. They don't allow groups to actually charge admission, so the donations are donations, not attendance fees. But enough people paid that we never had problems raising money for the rental fee. Now, because the event has brought so many people into the library for so long, they aren't even charging us the rental fee anymore.

Why did your local libraries ban community activities? Ours have pretty strict policies about what you can't use them for, and so far as I know they don't have a big problem of groups violating those policies. On the other hand, the rooms tend to be under-utilized, possibly because of the rental fees, and possibly because there's a fair amount of bureaucracy involved in reserving the rooms.
