No kidding. I was hesitant to accept... but then I had an idea. So that's a good start. My very initial 1st draft design is put together and I'm going to give it a try tonight hopefully... It's a solo game (naturally), so at least I won't have to subject anybody else to it yet. Except my brother... I did ask him to play test. We'll see.

Thanks for the kick in the pants, Santa! I really needed something to get me thinking creatively, quite honestly...

I think it is fine for others to join in on the design fun and show off their work, but Justaneye will be compared against my own design at the end to see if he is successful in his challenge.

I like that better. I will attempt to motivate myself to design and make a game.

While I love being forced to think within the confines of the 12-18 card limitation, I constantly keep finding myself thinking "if I could use JUST ONE MORE CARD!!!" or desperately wishing I could use some other component, like dice. But I'll get there.

I played the rough draft last night. It functions, but it was very easy and very quick. I have some good ideas and a bit of feedback from my brother, and I've adjusted a few things to make it more challenging. It should also make it a bit longer and I believe add in a bit more variety. I'm having fun with this! I hope I can get it to a point where I'm comfortable with calling it "ready" before I run out of time...

Speaking of your design.... We have yet to hear anything about it.. "Justaneye" has discussed his a bit.... I am thinking you are just going to play the memory game aren't you.

I am following the 12-18 card limitations and have a few ideas, but need to fill them out a bit more. Just been a bit hectic in life so I have to settle with a noting my ideas for now.

I have a plan for all 18 cards. Started working on graphics and flavor text as I drew out the sample board. Plan to finish and dress it up a bit by this Sunday. My is to test play on Sunday and Tuesday at group (although I doubt I’ll revise it), and then submit it. Do I just publish to this page or send it to the Santa account?

I would say just post it in this thread to let others give it a shot too! As for what I have been up to I have been working on trying to cram a simulation into those cards! I have some ideas on getting it to work and been sketching out somethings before I hope to try and focus on it a lot harder this weekend!

I was trying to decide on which game idea I wanted to pursue between a B-17 (C-17 using only 17 cards) or a rally card game (Rally Cards) and I have sided with Rally Cards so I hope to cram the spirit of rally into a bunch of cards!

Just 12 days left before the deadline... yikes! I knew time wasn't long but I hadn't really thought about the fact that I'm down to less then 2 weeks...

So, I had the chance finally to play after some adjustments, and I think it's coming along nicely. I need to get input from others though... My brother has tossed some ideas out (some that I've used) based on a read through of the rules, but hasn't had a chance to play (he has a toddler and is in the middle of a long distance move, so I can't blame him). Think I need to send this to a friend or two to get some feedback.

Secret One - am I allowed to ask for a play tester or two here on BGG?

If that's allowed, what does one normally use here to upload files so that they can be downloaded by the user? I'm totally inexperienced with the whole game design thing here on the Geek... Should I be using Dropbox? Something else? Don't think I have a Dropbox account, would need to get one if so... Is some other (free) recommendation?

You can make requests for playtesters if you want as for distribution I think dropbox will work, when completed just make a post in this thread where you describe your game post pictures etc.

Glad to hear! I am unsure how well mine will do as I have been hammering out the physics a bit. I have kind of eccentric tastes so I have a feeling this game will be a bit too heavy for the medium presented, but hopefully it will at least be a game that I want to play!

My game structure is weak but the proof sheet will done by Thursday.
(I let the artwork intimidate me and cause a work stoppage.)

Since my participation is ancillary, I’m going to take a picture of the proof sheet, and just post it here with instructions. It won’t be playable, but I think you’ll get the idea.

Almost out of time... need to make a couple corrections to the rules and they’ll be done. Feeling pretty decent about it. With more time I could probably do better, but I’m happy where it is. Managed to get to this point using 17 cards. I’m sure I could come up with a use for the last card without making it too fiddly, but I think I’m on the edge of being that way already. At any rate, I’ll have it up Monday, most likely. Just in time for the deadline. Busy day today and tomorrow, naturally, so it’ll have to wait.

I present my uninvited entry: Santa’s Helpers!

My hand wouldn’t hold the camera quite level and squared off but the square-cut cards are actually level, not wonky. Sub-par art, all mine. Weak game dynamics, lacking proper play-testing, but high on thematic elements.

Objective:
Help Santa ready his sleigh with only two passes through the deck.

Rules:
Shuffle cards, draw 4.
Players can use 2 actions per turn, plus any bonus actions identified on cards. Choices:
- place a card that meets requirements
- discard 1 or 2 cards
Players then replenish hand back to four.

Honoring Placement requirements:
1. Reindeer are escorted into the line by an elf.
2. Reindeer cannot be added to the line up UNLESS the reindeer named one or two places before it is present. Everyone knows the poem + song, ‘Dasher and Dancer, And Prancer and Vixen ...’
Dasher (or Rudolph, free placement) must be out out before any other reindeers.
3. Rudolph doesn’t like to around Olive because she laughs and calls him names. She’s cantankerous and only one elf can escort her back to the barn. That gal then sneaks a ciggie behind thestabke and doesn’t return to work.
The job’s not complete without a loaded sleigh. Santa and elevens load the sleigh.

Congratulations Val I unfortunately was unable to complete my design I have more ideas etc that I want to flesh out with my initial design, however life at home has become quite busy with my spouse needing to work a lot of overtime and other personal things on my end I do want to continue to pursue this design maybe I will enter it in the next button shy design contest.

If Justin completes his design he will succeed in this challenge and win one final gift.

WAT. Are you kidding me? You've already gone above and so far beyond expectations! Your job is done here!

My game is indeed "done." Will post momentarily. It's absolutely playable and works as well as hoped. I put "done" in quotes for two reasons. First, I'm still quite sure it could use some improvements (limited time = limited play testing). Second - I'm quite certain my rules could use some work. I did the best I could, but I'm still worried I could have explained things better. I hope that if there is confusion or better explanation needed, I might be allowed to change the rules as long as it doesn't significantly alter the game itself at all?

As a completely separate question, how does one go about getting the Game Designer tag? whistle

OK - I present my game, completed within the requirements - on time, and utilizing 17 cards.

Brew This!

Rules: https://www.dropbox.com/s/m81izahargiss3q/Brew%20This%21%20r...
Cards: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2kngtn3azuch0qp/Brew%20This%21%20c...

In this game, you are an owner/operator opening a brand new brewery. Your job is to brew and sell beer, keep your kegs from being empty through price and availability swings in the ingredients (barley, hops, and yeast) market, as well as through swings in customer preferences in the marketplace. As you buy ingredients to brew ales and lagers to keep beer in your kegs, you'll deplete the ingredients market. You'll have to pay to refresh the market with more of each ingredient, but the new volumes of the ingredients are random and the prices of each ingredient may change. Every turn the customer's tastes will swing between wanting to drink ales or wanting to drink lagers. Your beer may sell quickly, or it may sell slowly, or it may not sell at all which leads to spoilage loss!

When you've purchased all of the available ingredients (or all of one), or if you're unsatisfied with the current pricing on ingredients, you can refresh the market. For purposes of the game, you can only refresh the market 5 times - when you run out of beer, it's game over! You'll lose if you run out of beer to serve AND can't afford refresh the market while there are still available refreshes (this can happen especially with a lot of spoilage loss). Once you've used all 5 refreshes, when you finish selling (or spoiling) the beer left in your kegs, the game ends in a win. Take note of how much money you've earned, and try to beat your best score.

Due to limited play testing, I don't really have enough data to put together a chart of what's a good or bad final amount of money, but ultimately, that's what I'd like to do. The game allows cash to be counted up to $79 (yes, the dollar amounts are unrealistic, but I went with what was easiest to work with), but I've never actually gotten close to that, though it's possible. I think. At any rate, if somebody wants to help put together a "rating" chart based on how well a player has done based on finishing cash, that would be lovely.

I have no pictures to post here, simply because all the pictures I took are used in the rules as an assist to making card layouts make sense. I can post them here if anybody thinks it would be really necessary. The card art is terrible, I admit - limited time and $0 budget pushed me to use basic free clip art, but it does the job.

FYI - I don't know why, but I had a problem when I tried to print the PDFs using a Mac. A lot of the clip art is PNG files with transparent backgrounds, and printing on a Mac the transparent backgrounds became black, blocking out text on the cards. Most likely a software issue on the Mac I was using, but I honestly don't know. If this happens to you, I'm sorry. I don't know how to fix.

Thanks for checking out my game!

Edited just to add: I'm open to any and all feedback, not just looking for praise or whatever. Any constructive criticism to help me improve the game is quite welcome! Thanks!

Oh, man, I almost forgot to mention... The pages are *sort of* set up for double sided printing, but they just aren't quite right. If you don't mind them being slightly off, you can print double sided, but I would recommend using a sleeve with the two sides printed separately. That's what I did, anyway.
