My gaming group loves Cryptid but my group seldom has 6 players attending game night and hence I worked on the following variant which "ONLY" works for a 6 player game.

Variant brief:

-In this variant the 6th player only knows the hint mentioned in the rulebook.
-In this variant, the players deduce what the rulebook hint would be that the 6th player knows and use that additional information to narrow down on the creature's possible habitat.
-The 6th player functions as any other player, trying to deduce where the Cryptid creature's habitat is by asking or searching.

Possible type of hints found in the rulebook:
-No within 3 spaces clues
-No within 2 spaces clues
-No within 1 space clues
-No clues that mention any animal territory
-No clues that mention "X" (X=the territory type)
**There are 2 other types of hints which do not appear in the "?" column of any 5 player setup and hence not mentioned above.

Set up:
-Set up as 5 player game.
-The 5 possible type of hints mentioned above is made known to all players.
-Give the 6th player approximately 20 "meeples" of a color that is different from the color of any of the pieces in the base game.
-Also give the 6th player the Cryptid rule book and he/she looks at the
corresponding hint mentioned at the back of the rulebook for the selected map setup (this hint number is mentioned under the "?" column on the setup card).
-The 6th player does not participate in the initial sharing phase, where each other player places 2 cubes on the board.

Gameplay:
-When asking the 6th player, the question is: "Could this space be a type of clue?", the 6th player in accordance to his hint answers a "Yes(by placing his meeple standing" or a "No(by placing his meeple lying down".
Example 1) If the 6th player's hint was "No within 2 spaces clues" then if the space that the question is asked for falls within 2 spaces of any type of clue(Abandoned shack, Standing stone, Bear territory, Cougar territory) then the answer would be a "No" and the meeple would be placed lying down on that space by the 6th player.
Example 2) If the 6th player's hint was "No clues that mention water" then if the space that the question is asked for, is on water or within 1 space of a water then the answer would be a "No" and the meeple would be placed lying down on that space by the 6th player and if not then the answer would be a "Yes" and the meeple would be placed standing.

-When the 6th player receives a cube(i.e no) as a response to his question to another player, the 6th player must place his meeple lying down on a space which is in accordance to his hint.
Example - If the 6th player clue was "No within 3 spaces clues" then he must put his meeple lying down on a space which is within 3 space of any color structure.

-The 6th player while searching does not place anything on the space that he/she is searching.

We played a few games and seemed to work well. Hope you all enjoy this.
