If the Japanese player leaves an "8" army in Bangkok and four strength of air, that's essentially impossible to take right?

The British have at most 3 strength og long range air and an "8" army that walks in from Rangoon. The Brits could get lucky on air to air and then on air strikes but absent horrible luck, the air strength will provide two extra hits. Moreover, the Japanese can react a single destroyer from Singapore for sea control, which means the Brits will fire land units at -1.

Because of the impassable red lines, there's no way the Brits are going to take or even reduce Bangkok, correct?

Having taken Rangoon, you could go directly for Singapore, but that has its own set of problems. The Brits, given transport constraints, can never amphibiously invade with an "8" unit, so they'll be fighting 4 vs 8 in Singapore.

So, having taken Rangoon, forget the British?

No, don't forget the British after taking Rangoon. Yes, taking Bangkok from Rangoon will be very hard. Flipping the defender won't usually happen, and rebuilding a flipped army is not too painful, just deploy a replacement to Saigon. Beat your head against this wall and hope to get lucky if you have the resources, but also threaten to invade Singapore. The first invasion likely won't do much, but then invade with another division the next turn. With two in supply divisions and naval support vs one out of supply army the chances of flipping it are good. Since there are no bases adjacent, flipping the Japanese army back requires a lot of transport and oil, resources the Japanese can ill afford to use here. The Japanese can pretty much close this down by putting 12 air steps and two armies in Bangkok and Singapore, but if that much strength is facing the Brits then the USN is likely to be making rapid progress.
