The nominees for the 2018 Golden Geek Awards have been chosen by you! The voting is now open via these links:

Board Games

Instructions:

* Select the appropriate category from the buttons at the top of the page.
* Rank the items by clicking on the box and selecting the rank.
* Duplicate rankings are OK if you think the items are equivalent.
* Change a rank to N/A if you have no opinion on an item. Any other games you rate will be considered higher ranked.
* 1 is Highest - 10 is Lowest (in the case where there are more than 15 nominees the highest number is still the lowest)

Your votes are recorded immediately and may be changed up until the time voting closes (11:59 PM CST - April 1st, 2019).

The final voting will resolved using the Schulze method - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schulze_method

As usual, voting is restricted to either supporting users (having a supporter badge from any year is sufficient) or voters who pay a one-time 20 GeekGold fee, or users who have purchased an avatar.

Some categories have more than 10 nominees and some have less. In the former there were ties, and the latter there weren't enough nominees to fill the category.

Here's the list of nominees, and congratulations!

Yeah, personally I'm looking at that list realizing it was not a great year for games.

Basically I see: Rising Sun/Stuffed Fables...(PAUSE)....everything that has come out/become readily available to some extent in the last 1-2 months.

However, there are still some solid games in there. I kind of wish the cut off for awards were at a different point in the year, like the 2018 Nominees had to cover August of 2017 to July of 2018. This way we don't have the "Well TECHNICALLY this game came out at Essen, but the majority of people didn't get their hands on it until February/March of the following year". People are REALLY excited to play the games that just became available to them, so that may or may not sway their opinion a little bit. Just a thought.

I think the most interesting category is the Podcast Category. The idea that a Podcast can only win once is interesting, it's also interesting to see which Podcasts have not won yet as a result. I guess they just have to wait in line until they get the tap on the shoulder. I'm very familiar with Blue Peg, Pink Peg...Ludology (Geoff's only got a few episodes left as the host)...Heavy Cardboard...and Rolling Dice & Taking Names.

That's unfortunate For me this is the first year I've actually played a lot of them. On the strategy games list I've played every game except one!

Wow, I had the opposite response, realizing how many great games were made in 2018! Being privy to the nomination process, I was also surprised by how many other great games missed the cut.

For me it's not if they are great games or not, I'm just not a cult of the new person. So new games often just go by me until one time they just land on my table. So voting on the best of new games is always tricky for me.

Surprised Kemet: Seth didn't get nominated. Such a terrific expansion. Would've been nice to see my man Feld get some love for Carpe Diem or Forum Trajanum too.

Also I guess more people need to listen to Board Game Barrage as it's hands down the best podcast out there.

blue lagoon came out in the summer so the cult of new has forgotten it by now unfortunately. made our flgs's top games of the year if that's any consolation.

Any Cryptid mentions are probably over representing the game. That thing is so darn fragile, people tend to give away way too much information. Plus, innovative? I am pretty sure it's just simple Bayesian analysis.

As a verified card holder for the Cult of the New, I apologize for these nominations. I've played ten of the GotY nominees, and I'd probably say half of those are alright.

I'm disappointed Thanos Rising: Avengers Infinity War didn't get nominated for Best Coop and/or Best Thematic.

I'm also disappointed Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game – World War Hulk didn't get nominated for Best Expansion.

Of course. I also encouraged others to do the same. I just wish more people had done so.

These awards are meant to be a fun event each year. I'm sure you don't mean it this way, but this comment comes off as a slap in the face to the community, designers, developers, artists, and publishers of all these other games - and just because you have a different opinion.

Please feel free to celebrate other games that didn't make it on these lists. But please find a way to do it without cutting other people down.
