I played Cuba Libre when it first came out. I liked the mechanics, but wasn't too crazy about the theme. Now that there are quite a few options, I'm looking to get another COIN game. Distant Plain, Liberty or Death, Fire in the Lake, and Falling Sky interest me thematically. Length of play is a consideration. I don't know how these titles differ in complexity or play style. Does anyone have a recommendation?

Fire in the Lake is the "can't miss" entry in the series, the flagship and crowning achievement. It is the perfect marriage between theme and the COIN mechanic. Mark Herman and Volko are like Lennon and McCartney. Each game feels like an enriching historical experience.

Oddly, Falling Sky might just be the most fun of the series. It's smaller and lighter.

Those two are where I would choose from next.

Are you playing primarily solo, or with people?

Primarily with people. I will play solo to get enough familiarity to teach it.

You picked some of the lengthier in the series. Because none are short, Fire in the Lake is probably the best option. Falling sky is the simpler of the titles if you are concerned about people's ability to learn the game.
