IGNITION - bringing enlightenment where once all was dark
Avatar

I met Chad when he was having people playtest Combat Commander at a convention. I was very impressed with him and his game design, and I bought it as soon as it was published. Later, my oldest son and I played that game a lot. I feel that Combat Commander was a bridge for the transformation of our relationship from father and son, to father and son who are also friends. I think I can honestly say that for me the games you and Chad designed, and in particular Combat Commander and its expansions, were not merely a pleasant diversion. For my son and I, the games were a catalyst that improved our relationship and consequently our lives. I am so sorry to hear about Chad’s prognosis. I wish you both strength and peace.

Chad passed this afternoon. His life was a blessing to have shared and I am deeply grateful to have been a part of it. And I am indebted to all of you who wrote, followed my rambling posts, or just threw a "Like" on FB comments from time to time. Knowing you were out there, caring and hoping along with me, made my burden lighter. Thank you all!

Took the time with me to exchange ideas about a game on Patton’s 3rd army. Wanted to use some photos of my grandfather who served in that 3rd army, should he ever get enough material to do the project.

Professional, accessible, and very friendly - he will be missed.

So sorry for your loss, Kai. Chad was one of the true gems in this hobby. A stand-up guy and a master designer.

Many thanks to Chad for the countless hours of joy, adventure, and connection his works have given to me, my friends, and so many others.

And so much love to you and your families.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Combat Commander opened my eyes to a whole different world of board gaming, so I'm glad he was able to share his idea with the rest of us.

The world is a lesser place with Chad's passing.

I hope you and your family treasure all the happy memories.

Chad...Saddened to hear this. A great, innovative game designer...A greater person.

I'm fortunate to know this first hand.

Thank you Chad.

Appreciate the support. Sorry for the struggle you two are going through.

Probably impossible to sum up a person in a 6x6 pixel pic but do you have a suggestion?

Prayers and condolences for all of you and family. He was a brilliant designer and Dominant Species is a design everyone should experience! I never had the chance to play Urban Sprawl but I hear it too was a great design.

He will be missed but never forgotten!

I cannot take the credit for it but it's good to share.

There is an empty chair, at the table this day.

A hallowed place where, a friend once played.

The roll of his dice, my ears long to hear.

Or perhaps it would suffice, if he should suddenly appear.

With character sheet in hand, and a bag of Cheeze-doodles to share.

All his friends would stand, as he sat in the empty chair.

I hear his voice a-callin’,

And it ties my heart in a knot.

For he cries, “Though a comrade has fallen,

You must play for those who cannot.”

We conquered worlds on the run, he and I in the name of fun.

And as others may come and go, I make both friend and foe.

But what I long for most, is our past now long a ghost.

I will always remember him.

I met Chad and Kai at a GMT Weekend at the Warehouse. That weekend they brought Welcome to Centerville for playtesting. At that time, it was just titled "Centerville", and jokingly the name "Hanford" was being thrown around. I remember, as soon as we were buckled in with the rules, Chad and Kai busted out Through the Ages on the table nearby.

That was a great weekend and I had fun playing that incarnation of Centerville 3 times. Dominant Species and Combat Commander will always be some of my favorite games.

Goodbye, Chad. Thanks for the games.
