The text on the Satchel and Journal Card reads:

"The journal inside it contains the notes that you and your companions took during the previous expedition to the seventh continent. It serves as a very invaluable source of knowledge!"

Do you save earned Satchel and Journal cards from previously played games?

I didn't think so initially, but this text had me second guess my thoughts and I couldn't find anything in the rules specifically saying one direction or another.

You don't. The "previous expedition" is pre-game.

You reset absolutely everything between runs.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
There is like one card that specifically says to keep it, obviously you keep that.

I take that quote as a flavor text that sort of explains why a player might have pre-existing maps or knowledge of the island’s geography.

Thematically, you start the game with a journal stuffed with notes and maps. You just haven't gone through or deciphered them yet. One of the basic skill cards is "Examine the Notes".

If I understand what you're saying,

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Any experience I've earned, the cards that explain what I can do with Rock Worm or Flying Roots, etc. all get returned?
