Apologies in advance, I don't have all the card numbers etc but don't think it will matter for my query.

My recent play I was in a situation where I did something and had to draw
Spoiler (click to reveal)
3 XP cards
. I was out of the
Spoiler (click to reveal)
1 XP cards
and only the
Spoiler (click to reveal)
yellow, 7 XP cards
were left. So the rules state that:
Spoiler (click to reveal)
when you then have to draw an XP card and only yellow cards remain that you have to take a yellow. So then I drew 3 yellow XP cards which is equal to 21 XP points. So what I'm unsure of is if I were supposed to take one 7 XP card and then return 2 of the 1 XP cards in my satchel and then draw them for a total of 9 XP?

It seem like I was racking up the XP too quick for the XP mechanic.

Sorry I know this query is all over the place but any clarifications would be appreciated.

When you draw a gold 003 card it tells you to immediately return the 6 green ones.

Then continue drawing following the usual rules.

The "1 XP" and "7 XP" cards act the same as "2x" or "5x" tokens in any other game. You simply use them to economize the number of cards. So if you have 5 XP in your hand and gain 4 XP, you should ultimately have 9 XP in your hand, represented by one 7 XP card and two 1 XP cards.

As stated above, this is basically implicitly explained to you by the text on the 7XP card which states you need to return six 1 XP cards to grab it (essentially making 1 + 6 = 7).

I see, so in my example I would have drawn a total of 9 XP points?
That begs the question though, why will they have multiple yellow cards then?

Well what if you accumulate more XP points during the game?

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 (return 6)

7 + 1, 7 + 2.... 7 + 6, 7 + 7 (return 6)

etc.

Yep, 9 "points". There are multiple golds for when you run out of greens again.

Fair enough, makes sense thanks for the quick help.

So in my game I had about 12 XP points too many :O

Still lost though!

I assume that is for playing with multiple players.

Quest items with the book icon are common to all players anyway.

No, the extra gold Exp cards are for representing large numbers of exp points
It is quite possible to accumulate 30 or 40 experience before you use them.

Another newb question: I assume the game will tell me when I can spend these XP cards?

Starting playthrough #3 (crystal song) tonight, and still haven't had the opportunity to use them yet.

Just be patient, you'll find the place to spend them sooner or later

I hate the XP card mechanic. It makes sense but is bloated, and the "suprise factor" of not knowing it until the first time you get XP is pretty limited.

I just use tokens for XP. Much easier and feels better too when you have a large pile (I use the metal coins from dominion)

Actually, as XP cards go under your S&J card, it can have an impact if for example you have to count the cards under your S&J for some reason.

Also, the card mechanic allows for nice ideas like XP cards with additional effects. Like the new modified state cards or food cards i'm thinking about golden XP cards with maybe an additional effect like "you may discard this to remove a state card from your hand" or "you may banish this to take 7 random cards from your discard and shuffle them into your action deck" or "If you use this to buy an advanced skill with the keyword serenity, that skill costs 1XP less"

I think i'm off to design a little XP-expansion...

I really like the XP mechanic. It's cool how they can hide mechanics like this in the game cards, rather than explaining it in the game manual. Discovering how it worked the first time felt really cool.

I use coin tokens from another game for XP. I find the XP cards way too fiddly.

I don't see a huge benefit - you can just pull all the 003 cards out and switch them around as necessary.
