Having played once, I REALLY enjoyed the change to the main deck, something that in my opinion was severely lacking in the official game.

And my question about following the rules is related to how many times we're allowed to play the challenge, not the rules of the game itself (which I think I've figured out now after a dozen tries). For instance, with the Glass Road challenge you only report your first score. Then again, it's possible to reset that challenge to exactly the same scenario each time, which is different than Palm Island and the randomness of the shuffle. So maybe multiple attempts are okay?

I gave it another try.

Points: 17 + 4 (Chief bonus) - 4 (Wayfinder) = 17
Penalty: 10
Total: 7
Villagers used: Elder, Chief, Wayfinder

A little bit better. The Elder is really helpful when you need to beat the famine and that atrocious volcano.

Now, I'm looking forward to the "Fall Challenge". Thanks again for posting this.

Here's my first two plays with random shuffles prior to start (with the exception of placing the 3 villagers in the back as the rules state)

#1

Points: 26
Penalties: 20
Total: 6
Villagers Used: Wayfinder, Builder, Chief

Baaaad shuffle. Couldn't save any resources for the second event, as they all bunched up into one half of the deck.

#2

Points: 25
Penalties: 0
Total: 25
Villagers Used: Wayfinder, Builder, Chief

Much better. Lucky enough to get the two events split apart with some resources in front of each. Still needed a bunch of manipulation. Ended up getting 9 stars from the houses and an additional 5 from the Chief for the levels. The Wayfinder makes it much easier to level the other Villagers. Builder really helps with the last disaster levels.

Thank you for the contest. Will keep working at it! I enjoy this game.

I've been playing the basic game for a long time (I was a playtester). In hundreds of plays I've never gotten much better. I tried some of the extra stuff, but never liked the complication.

I *love* this variation. It has the relative simplicity of the original with a spice of danger. So far I've played one game and I think I'm going to get the booby prize for the lowest score. But that doesn't stop me from loving it.

Points: 12
Penalty: -40
Score: -28
Villagers: Chief, Elder, Wayfinder

I did much better on my second play:

Points: 21
Penalty: -20
Score: +1
Villagers: Chief, Elder, Wayfinder

What I like about this is that in addition to the beat-your-own-score (which I never minded) there's also something that feels like a win condition: no penalty. We'll see if I get there. But in the meantime, I think this will be the way I play the game for the foreseeable future.

this challenge is great! thanks a lot for interesting gaming variant. Played 2 games so far with 24 and 18 points, but I guess I will play this variant a lot. I will post the game info only if I beat my current lead score.

Have been playing this a bunch, and finally found a better score after about 10-15 more games.

Random shuffle set up.

Game score: 28
Penalties: 0
Final score: 28

Villagers: Wayfinder, Chief, Priest

Finally got everything to fall together. Still had to waste a few resources, but not as bad as prior games. This is definitely not the top score possible, and very likely not even the top score for this combination of villagers. The priest is a nice value card, with 5 points for 5 stone (which can be somewhat stockpiled in rounds 4 or 5 to get this achieved if the cards fall right. Having the wayfinder makes getting both the chief and priest easier, and, if done right, this combination of villagers gives you 5-7 extra points in addition to other resources.

I'm really enjoying this challenge. Will have to figure out how to do more in the future.

Finished Famine and got one step into Eruption. I didn't even use the builder.

Will try again with Wayfinder

This time I got famine and eruption to 1 step away from finishing.

I am not certain I did the Wayfinder active effect correctly. Anyone know a good tip to keep track of active effects?

Perhaps too focused on getting tons of resources to beat the disaster cards, so was too late and too little in getting points made.
