I wonder if this will be all new powers and abilities or repurposing of previous ones. Still, I’m interested.

Edit: Given the size of the map they might have called it Tiny World.

It’s a work in progress. They’re building the map slowly.

I never saw that coming.

40 years ago, I was a geek for being a role player.

20 years ago, I was a geek for being a computer gamer.
10 years ago, I was a geek for being a board gamer.
These days, everything is now mainstream, and geeks are officially extinct.

Indeed. I don’t expect that to be the final and only map - but it sure does look tiny.

I wonder if it will have teamwork like the six player map had or even something new. And will it be able to easily integrate with existing maps and races or be a stand-alone game? Actually, I’m not entirely opposed to a stand-alone game.

Definitely looks cool. I suspect it will be a mixture of old and new concepts with some slightly gimmicky thing to make it extra unique. It will probably be similar to Underground, though, in that it will be fully compatible with the other two games and the races/powers will be unique enough to not entirely replicate a previous combo.

I wonder if it'll add new powers and race abilities or just shift them around a bit.

If we're looking at 1-to-1...
Warcraft Small World
Kobold* Kobold
Forsaken Ghouls or Skeletons
Blood Elves Elves?
Trolls Trolls
Humans Humans
Goblins Goblins
Worgen Were-Power?
Night Elves Elves?
Orcs Orcs
Dwarves Dwarves
Murloks Tritons

* - The chits for this race resemble Kobolds in Hearthstone.
? - It looks like there's 2 types of elves.

There's not many powers displayed, but the 3 that are readable are Enraged, Farmer, and Herbalist. Farmer seems like it could easily be +1 VP for farms which would suggest that Humans have a different ability in this version. Enraged could just be a renaming of something, but Herbalist sounds like something that'd be new.

I think they'll reuse most of it. With expansions and whatnot it's really hard to come up with new powers that are as easy to explain and this is crucial for such a game as it attracts new gamers.

I feel like you can just use the current game to really get the same effect as all the races from World of Warcrast are already in Small World.

That’s what I was thinking too. They could make this a stand-alone game kind of like the various versions of Carcassonne. This would allow them to reuse powers and abilities and even choose a different art style if they wish. Additionally, limiting the powers and abilities might make it easier to balance them against each other and add new things without worrying how that would interact with every single old one.

One thing I see are faction color and symbols on the demo army boards. I wonder if that is for team play, or will you only be able to attack opposite factions? Seems like it if the latter, you would be penalized spending lots of money to buy only one faction armies if the market went in certain ways.

Good catch. thumbsup

If players are limited to only attacking the opposing faction I see a few solutions:
1) Two sets of races and powers to choose from (one set for each faction)
2) Being able switch factions when you choose a new race.
3) both of the above.

Using both of these together sounds particularly interesting to me. It puts the player in the role of an unseen force controlling the fate of the world - yes Small World already does that but the limitation on who you can attack somehow emphasizes that theme of gods playing games with groups that aren’t entirely in control of their own place in the world. It also makes the world more dynamic in that choosing the “loosing” side gives you more to attack just as being on the “winning” side can severely limit your chance for growth.

This looks like an awful reskin of Small World. Glad I still have my coffin box. That game captures the theme of WoW wonderfully. They should reprint it, instead of (or in addition to) releasing this stupidity.

Thank goodness they are replacing the fantasy theme with ...a fantasy theme.

StarCraft would have at least provided a different feel.

So far yes but we have almost no real information on this. Having only two factions and thus limiting who you can attack could also mean an introduction of new mechanics.

True but new faction mechanics could also change the game. I wouldn’t be opposed to a theme in a different genre but look at Carcassonne and all its variants. Unlike the infamous myriad of Monopoly reskins those at least provide something new. I’m hoping (or at least think it’s possible) that, like Risk 2210 A.D. did for vanilla Risk this might create something new and better. Admittedly that’s a pretty high bar and it would surprise me if this reached that but, for now at least, I can dream.

I just hope that the Dwarves no longer have such a garbage ability. Might steal whatever they put; hell, they feel like they need some major errata to make them playable.

Agreed. Next time I play I may make them unconquerable in mines - much like the Shrubmen in forests. With Dwarves limited numbers they wouldn't be as overpowered as the Shrubmen.

The number ONE video game in hours played of my life (roughly 400 days... x 24 hours) mixed with a boardgame I constantly lost and frankly hated because I really was terrible at...

There is still a small possibility I will buy it if - for some odd chance - they would include a solo option for it

— Happily playing WoW Classic again at a very leisurely pace btw... At level 26 and showing off my awesome Paladin Mace I got by running the Deadmines and Shadowfang Keep with my 37 year younger son...

Gaming can be so good...

...that's missing A Spider's Web, Underground, and some fun map options. It's good for what it is, but it could use a refresh with the new content.
