Avalon Hill (the Hasbro one) will be putting out a new printing of this classic game. I don't know if it's a new edition or a reprint of their last version. It's expected in March 2008

Maybe that'll get some new players...

I can't see any reason to replace my current set (I have the plastic stars and anchors), unless the bits are -really- nice. But if they were -really- nice, it would cost too much.

If they were smart, they'd be readying a 50th Anniversary Edition.

That's awesome. How did you find out about this? Is it on Hasbro's website somewhere?

An anniversary edition with a tin box would be cool

Yep, I've got an older wood version, so I doubt I'll buy a new one. But a tinned (or something) new wood version might be enough to make me upgrade. Mine is starting to show it's age.

Another plastic one won't.

I have a copy already, but I gotta admit, I'm interested. Thanks for passing along this info. I'll have to keep my eyes open.

I think I'd cry if that was released.

I am not interested in Diplomacy (I owned a copy once and never found anyone to play against), but I am encouraged to see AH doing something that is not Axis and Allies. Hopefully this will sell well and we will see some other reprints in the near future. For the record, I own the Hasbro reprints of History of the World and Monsters Menace America (formerly known as Monsters Ravage America). I am hoping that Kingmaker will get onto their radar again some day.

Saw this pic at funagain.com. Looks like a new AH logo too. I thought Hasbro/AH were going to "trim the fat" and focus entirely on A&A. This looks somewhat like new life.

Good catch on the logo. I like the box art. A cursory glance of it makes no reference to metal pieces, though, so I wonder if they've reverted to plastic (or wood!).

There is another pic there of dubious origin - looks kind of like what could be the board, except no provinces are named and Scandinavia is totally cut off. Not sure what that could be.

The press agent at Avalon Hill says that the company will announce its lineup by the end of January, with more info about the edition of diplomacy and other titles.

The words "Acquire" and "reprint" or "new edition" are all I want to hear.

Cardboard pieces.

Doesn't look like the 50th Anniversary Set I so badly want for 2009.

Ah, well.

I'll make do with my current copies.

Edit: Accursed Homonyms!

Yeah, that's just terrible.

It seems like someone wants it to fail on re-release. (maybe to
"justify" not bothering with older titles)

There simply aren't enough pieces in a game of Diplomacy to justify cardboard.

Ah well, I have my copy, and while it's showing more than a little bit of wear, It will serve for another 10-20 years no problem. Maybe by then there'll be a new version worth buying.

Agreed. One would expect more from a "50th Anniversary of Avalon Hill" edition. Though at that price point, I suspect they are trying to lure in new gamers as well as people put off by the high price of other printings on Ebay.

That said, that is a very nice looking board that's just crying to have some wood or metal pieces on it.

You're right. The board does look nice. From the picture it looks like the borders may be a bit on the light side. But it sure does look pretty. If it came with a new set of wooden blocks/sticks I'd jump all over it even though I already have a copy of Diplomacy.

Counters seem a tad lame since they are usually best when needed to convey great deals of information, which isn't the case with Diplomacy.

Still, I don't have a copy of the game and i'll probably pick this up.

Possibly worth buying for the nice board and just use older pieces or make pieces.

or not.
