(UPDATED 8/14/2008)
I have found the Chinese boardgame scene to be active and growing quickly. I thought gamers in China and those planning visits might appreciate a summary.

I welcome corrections, additions, or comments. However, if you'd like to make non-gaming-related comments about China, please do so in a different thread.

Chinese-Language Information:

There is a wealth of Chinese language information on boardgames on the Internet, including rules translations and information about get-togethers. Check the following websites:

www.boardgameary.com (a website of a Beijing gaming group that includes rules translations and other game discussions)
www.boardgamechina.cn (a website that covers many gaming groups throughout China and also includes rules translations, discussions, photos, and videos) Do not confuse this site with www.boardgamechina.com, which came first but is not so active anymore.
www.tagage.com (a Chinese language website that includes rules translations and game descriptions)
www.coolbg.org (a Chinese language website with many discussions, including rules translations)

I read Chinese too slowly to follow Chinese blogs well, but this link leads to a thread with web addresses of some boardgame bloggers:

http://www.boardgamechina.cn/forum/viewthread.php?tid=58&ext...

Places to Game in Mainland China:

In Mainland China, I am aware of gaming groups, gaming cafes, or individual gamers in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Changchun, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Harbin, Hefei, Leshan, Liuzhou, Nanjing, Ningbo, Shenyang, Tianjin, Wenzhou, Wuhan, and Zhengzhou. I’m sure there are others as well.

These groups are all Chinese-speaking, but most urban Chinese speak some English. I’m sure a foreigner would be greeted warmly and be able to find a game, though it would be a good idea to get in touch with one of the organizers in advance. Generally speaking, you do not need to bring your own games. The two groups in Beijing, at least, have large libraries of games.

Beijing: Beijing Boardgame and Wargame Club (www.boardgameary.com), meets at a teahouse in Chaoyang district every Saturday. This link has the address and a small map: http://www.boardgameary.com/bbs/viewthread.php?tid=2182&extr....

From the discussion and photos on the website it seems more oriented toward lighter euros.

However, the club says it offers Bang!, Mamma Mia, Frank’s Zoo, Settler’s of Catan, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, and other boardgames.

If you are interested in buying Chinese games

Go, Chinese Chess (and some variants), and Mah Jong are widely available. I don’t know anything about the best place to buy these. A few mass market games like The Game of Life, Monopoly, and Clue are available in Chinese versions. In addition, Carcassonne, Settlers of Catan, Citadels, and The Amazing Labyrinth have also been published in Chinese traditional characters (used in Taiwan) and are available on the Mainland. This link can lead you to a discussion of Chinese versions of foreign boardgames and some photos: http://www.boardgamechina.cn/forum/viewthread.php?tid=484&ex....

I am aware of three Chinese wargames: Storm Over the Taiwan Strait (台海风云) (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/29022), The Nanchang Uprising (南昌起义) (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/34976), and Four Crossings of the Chishui River (四渡赤水) (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/35211). There are hints on the Internet that another wargame will soon be released.

Recently, a local designer has published a card game called “Killers of the Three Kingdoms” (三国杀)(http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/35188), which is based closely on Bang! These two websites have Chinese-language information on the game: http://www.bgyoka.cn and http://www.sgs2008.cn.

Some Boardgame cafes listed above (e.g. Funbox in Shanghai) also sell games, but otherwise there are no brick and mortar stores in China offering Euros or wargames. The Chinese website analogous to e-Bay (www.taobao.com) has a decent offering of foreign games, but at high prices. Many Mainland gamers buy games from the HongKong Wargames Club: http://www.wargames.com.hk/, which offers 25% off for customers in Mainland China, Hongkong, and Taiwan. Taiwan Neuschwanstein Castle is another famous online shop in China: http://www.swanpanasia.com/. Funbox in Shanghai is the subsidiary in Mainland China.

It's very hard to buy boardgames, cardgames, and role-playing games in China mainland. Though you may buy some games on a website which is similar to E-bay (www.taobao.com), the price would be very high, maybe higher than buy it in any western countries. Actually, many gamers in China mainland choose to buy boardgames, cardgames, and role-playing games from Hongkong and Taiwan, or from abroad online-store such as timewellspent or thoughthammer.

HongKong Wargames Club is a very famous place to buy games for mainland gamers, as it's very convenient to go to HongKong. Its website in Chinese is http://www.wargames.com.hk/ They also offer 25% discount off for the customers in China mainland, Hongkong, and Taiwan.

Taiwan Neuschwanstein Castle is another famous online shop in China, the website in Chinese is http://www.swanpanasia.com/ The club named Funbox 365 in Shanghai is their subsidiary in mainland.

Before you get too envious of the hot deals we enjoy in China, I should point out that Irstar is describing the discount in the Chinese style: that is 75% of the base price or 25% off.
Thank you for correction, Kolumel.

Although many Euro-style boardgames as well as some America-style boardgames are produced in China, as there are many threads about these games in BGG, it's very difficult to find them in shops in mainland China. Most of them may be shipped to abroad as soon as they were manufactured.

Ted

Things must have changed since I last visited. Couldn't find any game stores when I was there...

Why did you look for a store? To buy games or to meet gamers?

Gamers in China gather in teahouses, student cafes and the like. FLGS are a rare exception.

Primarily to purchase games. Of course also to see if there were postings to local gaming events, etc. Found several hobby stores for plastic models and crafts just none had any games.

While I was in Beijing (for the last year), I joined the BGC club.
They were very welcoming to a foreigner, I was sad to leave!

I can recommend the club to everyone.

GW (kinda) store in Beijing
As told via SMS, got namecards of the GWish store:

MAELSTROM

北京市西城区鼓楼西大街39号100009
(86) 10 64060878
(86) 15810555579
(86) 15810555576 (English)
www.maelstrom.net - the website will be up in a few weeks I was told.

It is located just a short walk West of Drum Tower, kind of the extension westwards of the street with the many Gundam shops North of Nanluoguxiang 南锣鼓巷

I spoke with the British guy who opened the shop about a month ago. He is into tabletops and so far starts the shop off with the GW lines. It is not an official GW store of course, just what the guy starts his business with.

Will tell you details if you come over to my workplace for lunch
