Hey dutch people.

I've got some friends who are going to visit Amsterdam, this Summer. I heard games are very cheap over there, so of I course I want to take advantage of this situation... I've been in Netherlands twice already, but I didn't know boardgames at the time.
Can you point me in the right direction, please? I'm looking for a store kind of near the touristic center. If it had an online catalog, it would be great...

Thank you

I was in Amsterdam earlier this year and got Zooloretto for 10 euros at Het Paard. They have games, specialising in Chess, Go, etc. but they also have a very nice selection of unusual puzzles.

I would agree with the advice some have given to ignore the V&D in the town centre and go to the one at Buikslotermeerplein. I visited on a previous trip and saw many Phalanx games going quite cheap. The area also has a market and other shops, so it's not bad for rummaging around in general. You have to take a short ferry ride to the Northen part of Amsterdam and then hope on a bus to get there.

I hope your friends have a nice time in Amsterdam!

I'm updating this thread to note that the V&D at Buikslotermeerplein is really rather poor for games now (I was there in July).
I would say it's no longer worth a trip there just to check it out. The area is still a pleasant shopping area in its own right (department stores, shops, outdoor market), just not so much for games.

Any updates to this thread? It looks like a lot of these posts are more than a year old. I'll be in the low countries for a few weeks in February and I'm looking for things to do other than walk zombie-like through museums.

I'm also a WWII buff, so I would like to visit Nijmegen and Arnhem. Is Moenen & Mariken still a going concern?

End of Haarlemmerdijk is a nice game shop, and the gamekeeper (small street pretty close to the Westerkerk) are the two best gameshops in Amsterdam i know.
Hope this may get you somewhere

Yeah those two shops mentioned are where it's at. (gamekeeper, het paard)

But also you could go to the American Bookcenter (second floor) where they have a small collection of interesting boardgames, both euro and trash whatever you prefer and some games you wont find at the more "dedicated" shops mentioned earlier, like Flying Frogs Productions games and other american import.

ALSO,

there is a shop called "Mini-Wonders" in Wormerveer, Antillenstraat 1, which is a little to the north of Amsterdam +/- 20 minutes by train. They are an unadvertised shop that sells boardgames as well as wooden toys and warhammer stuff. They have a nice selection of games mostly euro and some fantasy flight ameritrash stuff. Check it out!

cheers,
good luck
good hunting

Sorry, seems I'm too late cry

Arnhem has Het Spelkwartier --> http://www.spelkwartier.nl/
(Steenstraat 4, 6828 CJ Arnhem)

Other than that, you could check out the V&D, but your best bet is to check me out, and see if I have time to drive you to Essen, where you have AllGames4you . It'd be cheaper than anything else, since I drive on LPG.

I understand the V&D in the central part of Amsterdam never had a good selection of games, and the larger V&D in the North of Amsterdam got rid of its games section too - nothing to be had the last time I was there (about a year or so ago).

I was referring to the V&D in Arnhem. It has a great selection of games.

Nothing like Galeria Kaufhof though - go to any Germany city and check out Galeria Kaufhof, esp. the Queen games - but there I go, on and on about Germany ninja

That's reassuring to know that other V&D's still stock games and it's not a chain-wide phenomenon.

De Bijenkorf, on the other hand, have gotten rid of practically all (if not all!) games in Arnhem. Wonder if this is the case everywhere in Holland... yuk

Well, they used to stock Avalon Hill games, back in the days... (taking '70s here...). But yes, only during the Sinterklaas season (just before the christmas season) do they, or most department stores, stock games.
