Hi!
I'm working on some new homemade city tracks to be used with FormulaDé.
I'd like to submit you the preview just to receive some feedback/suggestions.

1) ITALY - MILAN - Castle

2) ITALY - ROME - Tiberine Island

3) ITALY - ROME - Colosseum

4) ITALY - BOLOGNA - City Center

Please, let me know your opinions about all of them.
Thank you.
Alessandro

Look pretty cool to me. I really like the layout of the Milan track, the Bologna track might be interesting since you'd have one area where you'd be going slow, then a big straightaway. This makes me want to make some street tracks as well.

Could one of you please make a track in Copenhagen, Denmark?

Sure, any suggestions? I don't really know anything about the city. What might be something you'd want included?

How are you doing this?

I've got city images from Google Earth (are them Public Domain?), and then I'll edit the track using a vectorial graphic program (like Freehand, Illustrator or even TheGimp).
The longest part is drawing each single rectangular track sector. surprise

If anybody knows a simpler way to do it, I'll be really grateful to hear some suggestion from him?

Alessandro, these look stunning. I've started work on a local track, but it is going to take me a long time before it is anywhere close to looking as good as these (if it ever does). I look forward to seeing them in release.

If you're using Illustrator, you can use a trick I used. Make a pattern brush that will draw track, that way you only need to make paths in the shape of your track and apply the brush.

Is it possible to "share" that Illustrator brush?
so that I can give it a try...
Or maybe is there a good tutorial somewhere over the net for creating own brushes?

Sadly I'm more familiar with Macromedia Freehand 11 than Adobe Illustrator CS3.
Please, let me know.
Thank you
Cheers

Well, it's actually a whole bunch of brushes, like a couple dozen, but they are mostly similar. If I can figure out a way to export them, I can upload the file to the site. I use Illustrator CS still, not sure if they'll work with the new versions or not.

Wow, they all look great. I'll agree that the one in Bologna seems quite interesting but in the end, i hope it'l be possible to download the four tracks (and many more) :-)

One day, i hope i'll have the chance to learn how to use Illustrator to make my own track..... one day....

Excellent stuff Allesandro! It is hard not to like those exotic(for me) locations. Especially the Colosseum & Milan.

The pattern brush is super simple to make and it works pretty well and allows you quickly to see the apporximate length of straights. I've used my own for my own versions of Mosport and Riverside and an old redo of Jarama. It has issues with handling the corners properly (and most of the time you'll want to adjust the widths to vary the # of boxes in a corner...so there it is better to do by hand).

In Illustrator CS3 there should be support for previous version. surprise
I think it's not possible to export a single brush, but maybe you could try to "export" your brush Library.

I'll post here my "work in progress" on Bologna City Circuit.
4) ITALY - BOLOGNA - City Center

As you can see some arrows inside turn squares are missing.
What do you think about turns?
I need also some suggestions about placing BOXES.

I hope to hear some suggestions about it before proceeding.

Have a nice weekend
Alessandro

Why not a 3-stops curve on high left?

for the boxes, it would be a shame to have them on the long line, some pilots would stop instead of having to break a lot of things on the next curve

Maybe you could place them on the top line, with 12 spaces in this line, it could work?

You are right... with 18 spaces... it's a must.

For solving this we use a HomeRule that allow you to enter boxes ONLY in 4th gear. cool
In this way I could freely set the BOXES on the bottom straight.

These are only ideas, please tell me again your opinions.

Maybe I should also MERGE the 2x "1 Stop" turns on top right?
It will became a 2 Stop Turn...

(only another idea)

They certainly look terrific, Alessandro! The satellite imagery is much more eye-catching than the traditional FD artwork.

A city I would recommend is Canberra, Australia. The city lay-out and lake would offer you lots of canvas to design a unique track on.

Other suggestions to explore: Sydney, Australia; Washington, DC, USA; Salzburg, Osterreich.

Wow! Those look excellent. I really like that you used Google Maps to create the background for the tracks. It adds a more realistic feel than the random graphics on the Formula De maps.

I wish I had the ability to make these then I could make local tracks. How long does it take you to make one of these maps? Just in case I ever get ambitious!

Thank you Larry,
you have filled me with compliments. blush
I'm really happy to hear some good appreciations like yours over the net.

You also gave me a really good idea about creating an "ITALY SERIES" group of tracks. Italy has a great number of amazing places.
Let's see how many I could create.

Eye-Catching!!! This was exactly what I've got in my mind.
Happy you liked the result.

I'll surely have a look to layout of suggested cities.

Hi Jeremy,
for your information Bologna Track took me about 3 days to complete.
Considering that I worked on it durng spare time.

Don't fear ambition! cool
If I reached this level... I can bet you can afford the same result!

This is the "preview" of the Track (ready to be published).
If you consider it good enough, I can publish it immediately for free download.

Otherwise let me know if some changes are needed.

Highlight the longest line through the corner with darker background. Formula Dé Online has done that with the maps they use and it is a lot easier to find an ideal line through, saves a lot of time and pondering about the best possible move

The beauty of your concept is that you can create a high-quality FD track for any location on the planet.

I look forward to their availablity, Alessandro.

Ciao,
Bill
