After Beyond Monopoly! last week, we got Melissa to talk about her role in translating Agricola and then Rob asked more questions and it is all good, if you like Agricola.

If you go to the Vimeo site, it is on a larger screen.

I shot some general video of the room. I may put that online. I can do so and make it private on Vimeo if you like.

That's what I was thinking of... Thanks Melissa

It'd also be fun to see some video of the room if you have it Jon.

Will do.

Andy pointed out later that Louise was also a GOTW, so we actually had 5 together in the room , but missed getting her into the photo.

That would be a very interesting video if I could make out what Melissa was saying. To get reasonable sound quality, you either need a microphone close to the speaker's mouth, or a shotgun microphone handled by someone who is good with one.

And for us poor sods who weren't there, maybe someone could enlighten us about the identity of the inhabitants of the picture? GOTWs were mentioned, so I suppose Melissa, Jon and Andy is in there, but apart from the obvious one (in pink) who's who?

[edit]BTW, I haven't watched the video yet, I'll do that at home tonight [/edit]

Huge thanks to Jon and Rob (and Melissa, of course!) for taking the time to do this.

For a completely amateur video, I found the sound quality fine once I'd "tuned in" to it. And it's easy to skip back over bits if you don't quite hear it right.
Jon isn't a video enthusiast - he's a gaming enthusiast who sometimes gives his time to shooting and editing videos for the benefit of us all, for which most of us are very thankful.
I'm sure he'd rather invest his time and money in games than buying microphones and perfecting his videoing techniques, and I'm quite happy about that!

I only bought the camcorder last year purely to shoot gaming stuff, especially around Essen. I did look at the options, and a camcorder with a mic shoe was too expensive for someone with zero experience of filming, editing and posting. I was really going in at entry level just to try it out. I did try some external mics, but they were not suitable because of impedance. And buying a specialist mic to go on the mic in socket would be £100. Plus the camcorders with shoes were physically larger than I wanted to carry. The new harddrive camcorders were way out my range. As John Kennard said, this is strictly amatuer for me, that is, for the love of it.

I did shoot some inteviews at Essen last year but I didn't post them yet. I may post them this week. I talked to Michael Schacht, Reiner Knizia, Martin Wallace and a few others. I had a lot of trouble doing the transcribing and editing, and I couldn't do the things I really wanted, like dropping in other shots and pics but keep the sound uninterrupted.

I have learnt from my experience, but my life is too short to pretend I'm a serious director. I'm sticking with wobbley shots and poor sound!

Listening to it again, although I am familiar with the material, I think it is clear enough. Melissa's accent takes a little getting used to, but it seems clear to me. Turn the sound on your computer if you can't hear it.

EDIT: Just to explain, the whole thing was done on the fly. I was sorting out the game cabinets, and Melissa and Rob were chatting behind me, and their chat was so interesting I immediately knew BGGers would want to listen in. So I grabbed the camera and asked them to talk, and Melissa and Rob gratiously gave up an hour to shoot some stuff. Completely unplanned, unscripted, unrehearsed. I think they both did a neat job.

Crikey (as they allegedly say Down Under). Lucky you had your camera!
I honestly thought it was all part of Melissa's Grand Tour Plan

And to think, the only payment you got was an evening with Melissa.....
Actually, I reckon at that rate you owe us some more videos!

It sounds like the X Deck could be really fun. Does anyone know if Zev is planning on printing and selling these decks for those that can't fly out to Germany?

[insert standard I-don't-work-for-Z-man-or-Lookout-and-this-is-just-my-limited-knowledge disclaimer

Thus far, Zev has had nothing to do with it - it's a purely Lookout affair - so that's a "no". For now, anyway.
Of course, if there's an obvious high demand, anything could happen...

Thanks RacingHippo,

I wasn't sure if Zev did the Lookout Games distribution here in the states or what. I'll just have to wait and see!
