I'm going to spend a few weeks in London and Paris in May, and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a cool game store/hobby store in either city? Don't worry, I'll be seeing all of the "touristy" stuff too. I'm not THAT big of a geek... just might want to break up some of the sightseeing monotony.

just got back from London myself. The Orc's Nest is a great game shop in the west end. just google them for the address. I got a couple of tees there for friends back in the states.

Unfortunately these are only three "proper" games shops left in London. There used to be a lot more, but they've fallen, one by one, to the twin onslaughts of Games Workshop and computer games...

Opposite the British Museum is Playin' Games:

I would suggest Leisure Games as being a 'must' visit:
http://www.leisuregames.com/

and Orc's Nest (mainly, but not exclusively miniatures and RPGs):
http://www.orcsnest.com/

I would second Orcsnest and Playingames. They are both central and near places you are likely to be visiting anyway, i.e. the West End (theatres) and the British Museum respectively.

Leisuregames is good but is out in the wilds of Finchley - several stops up the Northern Line and there is nothing else to see there.

There is also http://www.compendia.co.uk/ in Greenwich - some Euro's but no Wargames. Greenwich itself is worth the trip - the Observatory, Naval College (particularly the Painted Hall) are worth a look, so it's somewhat easier to justify the trip there - take one of the boats from Westminster Pier which go up to the Thames Barrier and then back to Greenwich to drop you off - from the river is a great way to see the city.

Great suggestions from everyone. We're staying in Westminster, so everything sounds like it'll be close, and I'd love to see Greenwich while we're there.

What's the deal with Games Workshop, and why do they have such a bad reputation? Are they like the McDonalds/Starbucks of gaming? Do their games really stink, or do they just have a reputation for crushing their competition? I remember visiting one in Edinburgh a few years ago before I was really into gaming. It did feel a bit plastic and contrived, but there aren't too many game stores for me to compare it with. I guess I'll have a better idea once I visit some of your recommendations.

Cheers

Some years back when Games Workshop were in expansion mode they bought up many independent specialist game stores across the UK and rebranded them a Games Workshop stores. Typically there was only ever one specialist game store per city anyway. At first this seemed OK as they split the shops between Games Workshop product and other board games etc. However over a year or so the non-Game Workshop product was phased out leaving only plastic orcs and spotty teenagers.

Actually I only know this happened for definite in a couple of places (York for one) but assumed it was nationwide - this is one reason I have a downer on them.

Their current pricing is also somewhat extortionate - fortunately my kids haven't got really into it.
