Everyone is eagerly anticipating the new releases of 2009... just look at all the "cleaning out the closet", "downsizing", and other Ultimate Trades or auctions that are springing up every day.

Agricola, Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game and the other hits of 2008 continue to get all the glamour, attention and play time they deserve.

Valentine's Day has just passed and there were many games that spent the day alone and unloved in the dark recesses of bookshelves and closets... unwanted and forgotten. Isn't is there enough love for all the games out there? Where's the love for the Spawn's, the Candyland's, the Cootie's and the Tanga Trash of the world? Can't a little love be found for them too?

This math trade is a quest... a quest to find love for those games that are otherwise unloved by the BGG community.

In pursuit of this quest there are a few restrictions:

1) You may submit as many unloved games as you want. An unloved game is one where there are as many or more users trading it than users wanting it (users trading >= users wanting). When you submit an unloved game make a note of the number of users wanting it and the number of users trading it.

2) You may submit up to three loved games or other items (GeekGold, DVD's, Gift Certificates). By corollary, a loved game is one where there are more users wanting it than users trading it (users trading < users wanting). When you submit a loved game or item mark whether it is your first, second or third loved item.

3) Sweeteners are fine, but a loved sweetener added to an unloved game spreads the love already... so the whole package counts as one of your loved submissions. Don't forget to note the love (or in this case, unlove) of sweeteners as well. Is an unloved sweetener really a sourer?

Exception to the sweetener rule: a loved expansion added to an unloved base game will not make the package loved.

And now, on to the boilerplate which I have gratuitously reused (with permission) from Jack Kaye's (anglotiger) Inauguration Day math trade.

Trade GeekList: http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/39594 (Open for your entries on the 18th at 8pm Mountain Time - don't ask me to open it any sooner)

Request GeekList: http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/39595

Discussion Thread on Bundling Lots: http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/39832

Use of the On-Line Want List Generator (OLWLG) is very highly recommended (please remember to tip JeffyJeff some GG for his support).

However, if you would like to submit hand-made lists I will accept them with the following caveat: if there are any issues with hand-made wantlists after the submission deadline I will not try and correct them or modify them in any way. The wantlist items and possibly the wantlists themselves will be removed and the math trade will move forward. This may sound rough, but that's the risk of hand-made lists. As a result, unless you are VERY familiar with making wantlists by hand I would VERY HIGHLY recommend using the OLWLG.

Please do not delete items or sweeteners once you have listed them.
You can always submit a blank want list for an entry if you've traded it away before the deadline.

OK - some simple rules, gratuitously lifted from Jack Kaye's Inauguration Day Math Trade - please take a few minutes to read them:

1) Gift certificates, Geekgold, DVDs etc are all permitted (but they count as a loved submission).

2) Gift certificate and GG arbitrage are NOT allowed.

3) Non-game entries must be added as "Outside the Scope of BGG" (game id 23953) or "Miscellaneous Game Accessory" (game id 5985) and must include the +altname+ brief description -altname- format in the description of your item. In general, non-game entries are loved items (see exception in [4] below).

4) If you are offering an expansion for which there is no entry in BGG (for instance expansion cards handed out at Essen) and NOT the base game, please use "Miscellaneous Game Accessory" to help avoid confusion. An expansion without a BGG entry has the same love or unlove as the base game.

5) You are expected to describe, as accurately as is reasonably possible, the condition (components and box), language and edition of your item in the description. This includes sweeteners if they are physical items (i.e. not GG).

For games not brand new (in shrink) you must inventory the game's components and list anything missing. Do not assume it's complete. Also, remember that just because something is "new in shrink" that doesn't mean that you shouldn't disclose any dings. It might not matter to you, but it matters to some people.

If the game and/or expansion you are listing is a "Print & Play" make that clear in the description (and I recommend you give specifics what it was printed on, mounted on, etc).

If you are listing an expansion if you reference the base game in the description be clear one way or the other if you are including the base game or not. Do not include a link to the base game unless you are including it as this looks, in the OLWLG, as if you are.

6) Your shipping restrictions must be clearly stated and if you are not covering full shipping, you must state precisely how much of the shipping you will cover. You are not permitted to require a specific amount for shipping from the recipient and must cover at least the first $5 of shipping costs for items you send out. "Mirror shipping" is not allowed. People will offer to pay what they think they can afford, within the rules - if you don't like someone else's shipping policies, then don't put their items on your list. Any ambiguity will be interpreted as generosity on your part. This means that if you don't include a shipping policy, then it is assumed that you will ship anywhere in the world for free!

If you are not covering full shipping within your own country, please state clearly where you are shipping from as this will help anyone who is trying to figure out their shipping cost for your item.

7) Sweeteners are to be listed using either the GAMEID formatting (prefered, example Hansa) or a link to the game's page (this will look like http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/8989). If you don't use this format your sweeteners won't show up in the OLWLG properly.

8) If you've been reported as a bad trader, you cannot participate. If you try to, I will remove your entries.

9) Please do NOT include links to other games in your entry unless you are actually including them as a sweetener, as this is displayed in a misleading manner by the OLWLG.

10) Finally - you are expected to periodically check during the item submission period, and preferably during the want list submission period, to see if anyone has commented on your entries. People often ask questions of items - most commonly because you have forgotten to state a version, language or shipping policy - and you should check in to address such questions in a timely manner should they arise, so that everyone then has the correct information available.

This is a very easy thing to do. Just click on "My Geek", then "Contributions" and finally on "GeekList Items". You will then be able to see your items without having to find them in the trade GeekList along with any comments that people have made. You will only need to go back to the trade GeekList to make adjustments or answer questions if there were any.

Other useful information

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/32005 (Duplicate protection)
http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/159648

Software Used: TradeMaximizer 1.4 with duplicate protection. SEED=1234567, ITERATIONS=100, METRIC=USERS-TRADING

List Cap: None

Maximum Submissions Per User: Unlimited, but subject to loved and/or unloved restrictions

Geekgold restrictions:

Users may not post more geekgold than they currently have. Geekgold arbitrage is not allowed.

Key dates (all times MOUNTAIN TIME)

Open for posting games: Wednesday, February 18th (8pm) until Tuesday, February 24th (6pm)

Want list submission period: Tuesday, February 24th (8pm) until Thursday, February 26th (8pm) - no extensions!

Results posted about an hour thereafter.

Please note that it's best to work on your want list and submit them early - you can always make changes and resubmit later. This will prevent you from being left out if you forget the deadline.

Also: Creating want lists is not the same as submitting them. To submit them you will need to click on the "Submit My Wants" button. If you're not sure how to find this, consult the documentation referenced above or ask in the discussion thread.

When you submit your want lists, you will receive a confirming GeekMail. If you don't get one, your want lists haven't been submitted. Your want lists in the GeekMail may be truncated - this is fine.

Want list submission

Submissions may be made at any time after the 24th (8pm), but only by the OLWLG. If you will be unavailable during the want list submission period but still wish to participate, contact me directly and we can discuss alternatives.

Note: only errors by the moderator will invalidate the results.

Also in the case that there is a problem after the results are posted, at most it will only invalidate the affected trade chain(s) and not the entire results set. In addition if the problem can be resolved by the most directly affected party or parties, then that is perfectly acceptable.

Re: Where's The Love??? Math Trade - Discussion Thread
Questions that have come up during the MT:

d10-1
Quote:
Where would a game be placed (loved or unloved) if the users wanting and users trading are the same number?

Users wanting is greater than users trading = loved

Users wanting is less than or equal to users trading = unloved

d10-2
Quote:
For sweeteners that are expansions to a base game: Do loved expansions to an unloved game make the entry count as loved (assuming the main entry is for the unloved base game)?

No. There is a special exception for this case that causes the package to be unloved.

d10-3
Quote:
Can I use the new "copies" function to add duplicates?

Yes, but see caveat below.

Quote:
Say I had 3 copies of Agricola? - Would that be 3 Loved, or only 1 ?

%Options%
Copies: 3
%End%

Three loved since it could potentially be three trades.

d10-4
Quote:
I have a listing with multiple offerings.
Would such a listing be allowed in your MT?

Yes

Quote:
If so, I presume it would be LOVED as there is at least one loved game.

Correct, it would be one of your three loved submissions.

Quote:
Also, if it is allowed, would I have to identify each game as loved or unloved?

If it's one of your three loved submissions don't worry about identifying wanting/trading. It's only for the unloved submissions that this is necessary.

d10-5
Quote:
Are out of scope items allowed as Unloved items?

In general, items beyond the scope of BGG are loved items.

The only exception is an expansion that does not have a BGG entry and the base game is also unloved.

d10-6
Quote:
Are you requiring the use of the OLWLG, or can one join your math trade by hand entering their math trade wants?

The premise here is strange. You are encouraging people to list unwanted games? I despair at the quality of the final item list.

It also seems odd to permit miscellaneous stuff, gift certificates, etc. I feel you should stick to your focus.

1) You may submit as many unloved games as you want. An unloved game is one where there are as many or more users trading it than users wanting it (users trading >= users wanting). When you submit an unloved game make a note of the number of users wanting it and the number of users trading it.

to "keep it easy" I wouldn't make that last part a requirement... the OLWLG displays that info ("Trade,Want,Wish:").... in addition it locks those stats in the 1st resync that the game id is picked up (the OLWLG caches on a per geeklist basis, the game's stats).

Not unwanted but less wanted (though I'm sure there will be stuff completely unwanted)... it's been done before with success... one person's junk is aother's ... well maybe not treasure but at least wanted

Yup... to find the unwanted a little love.

I thought about that, but they count as one of your 3 loved items so they're limited.

The problem is that the trades aren't free. Both sides have to pay shipping. This makes trading even a game you hate for another moderately wanted game a tough decision (unless the game in question is out of print). I guess time will reveal how successful this will be. I plan on entering a few items. Not sure if I will do any trades since I will surely get the shaft by people only paying the first $9 or whatever.

Or, they're larger lots. I'm expecting that people will probably offer lots of 3-4 moderately wanted games.

Yup, it's not a no-ship... and it's going to be more difficult for you due to International shipping costs, but I'm relatively sure this has been done before with success (unless I'm confusing it with one focused on "small stuff").

Re: Where's The Love??? Math Trade - Discussion Thread
Even if it has been done before... what purpose could possibly be served by limiting the number of "loved" games in the trade? It won't encourage people to list or trade more of the "unloved" games, as people would likely have listed those games in a normal math trade anyway. It only serves to limit the overall quality of the math trade and will result in fewer overall trades, as well as fewer trades of the "unloved" games that you are trying to encourage people to trade.

Counter-productive.

I agree that maths trades are only hurt by any arbitrary restrictions placed on them. However, one great thing about the BGG community is that users are free to moderate any type of math trade they wish.

Hopefully this will lead to larger bundles of loved games, since we're limited to 3. The larger the bundles, the less of a hit shipping is. Shipping a $60 3-game bundles for $15 makes more sense than shipping a $20 game for $10.

Re: Where's The Love??? Math Trade - Discussion Thread
I'm not sure I understand why the number of users trading and wanting are the criteria used to identify "loved" and "unloved" games.

It costs me nothing to add a game to my list for "want in trade." I can add games that I'm probably going to buy very soon (and thus will not actually try to get in a trade) as well as games that I'm only thinking about acquiring and that I'm not sure that I really want. The result is that it's really easy for my want list to grow, while my trade list, on the other hand, is limited by the games that I actually own and am willing to trade. This will seriously limit the number of games that are categorized as "loved."

Actually what happens is that folks focus is different than in a completely open MT... the "junk", "less wanted" and "small stuff" is often ignored in a big MT... this is why it has worked in the past.

I'm not saying you'll see a trade percentage that will set records, it likely won't, but it gives this "unloved" stuff a better chance to trade. As Dan said, if this MT isn't for you, like New England weather, wait a day (well a week or two in this case) for the next one.

The same purpose as the other specialized math trades like the previous war game or war and space math trades... to limit the focus.

You're right though, it does lead to fewer overall trades. But, I didn't want to run a massive math trade. Just a little unloved game trade (they're green with envy of the loved games).

Yea, the title of this MT is misleading... it's basically the opposite of an "in demand" math trade... ie. items that would have been excluded from one of those.

I think folks have been spoiled by the mega math trades of late... I'm looking forward to this one for a several reasons... it's different, I'm hoping to move some unloved items, and it won't be as much work/time for putting together my want lists.

I also believe this is Rick's first time running a math trade... so keeping the size down is not an unwise move to cut his teeth on

It's the opposite of the "In-Demand" math trade Jack ran last year. I was going to start this last week and have it submissions start on Valentine's Day (hence the love theme), but the OLWLG was offline.

So I waited a week and am running it now. It's not the best metric, but it's a metric.
