Re: War is sometimes the answer Math Trade
For this MT, I asked Jeff if he was open to allowing some non-wargame entries if we kept the ratio low, so he wanted to get some consensus from the group so here is the question:

Poll
Would you want this Math Trade to include non-wargames?
No, wargames only
Yes, but only at a 1 non-wargame : 3 wargame ratio (per person)
Yes, but only at a 1 non-wargame : 5 wargame ratio (per person)
      81 answers
Poll created by kneumann

My thoughts: I have a bunch of wargames I would be interested in posting, but do not have many on my wantlist, so some ratio of non-wargames, at least for me, would certainly open up the possibility of more trades.

Post your thoughts below.

Thanks

Agreed. Although the way the poll was constructed it may cause folks to mistakenly believe that most people want "No, Wargames only."

Jeff the header in the request list says:

But the trade list looks like it's open now and items have been posted. Can we start posting our trade items?

Although I can't change the text in the poll, I could add some clarification if you think the wording is confusing. Since the poll question is "Would you want this Math Trade to include non-wargames?" I thought the response "No, Wargames only." was clear that the people who selected that choice want wargames only? Did you read it differently?

Not exactly. 20-20 Hindsight = Might have been better to set up the First poll as:
1. No. Wargames only.
2. Yes. Allow some wargames. Ratio to be determined.

Second Poll:
1. 3-1
2. 5-1

As it is now the majority of voters may favor allowing wargames, but may be split between 3-1 and 5-1. So the, "No. Wargames Only" entry may get more votes than either of the other two (but not more than the combination of the other 2).

I see your point. Since the poll is set up for only one answer, could you extrapolate that (as of now) ~65% of poll takers are ok with some non-wargame entries and of those, people, ~62% favor a 1:3 ratio?

Re: War is sometimes the answer Math Trade
Personally, I'd prefer that a wargame math trade not be diluted with the same old entries we see in EVERY other math trade. If that happens, then what's the point to calling it a wargame math trade, when copies of Slide 5, California, and Buy Low Sell High are all over the place, as usual? The more non-wargames listed, the fewer wargames will get traded.

Actually you may trade more wargames if you open the MT to a limited number of non-wargames.

I am in the same boat. I have a ton of wargames, but no longer play most wargames (so am not interested in trading them for (most) other wargames).

Obviously, success depends on what non-wargames are offered. As much as everybody likes to complain about the Tanga-class games, JeffyJeff has provided the data over and over showing that they trade (in non-wargame) MTs and also grease the skids to facilitate other non-Tanga trades. Like you, I would prefer to not see any of the Tanga-class games as I already own all of that stuff that I need. However, other non-wargames would be very enticing (and could serve a similar function in this MT as the Tanga games do in non-wargame MTs).
The moderator could allow some non-wargames with a ratio (as was suggested above) and specify some kinda quality standard for the non-wargames. However, a "quality test" would make the MT a bit more complex and the moderator may not want to deal with that added complexity.

Not necessarily true - the Trade Maximiser algorithm may well achieve a better number of trades if we mix in more games of ANY type.

When we're trying to focus on something specific like wargames, bringing in items with broader appeal will detract from the wargames, which is supposed to be the point of this particular MT. If you want to mix in games of any type, why bother calling it a wargame math trade?

The problem with wargames is that most wargamers only have interests in specific subjects, design series, or company. So, except for collectible titles that everyone would be jumping at to speculate on, even the best wargames will not be on too many want lists.

OTOH, something like Dominion will have a lot of people clamoring for it because it's the flavor of the month, or Power Grid because of it's broad, general appeal. Those will generally be on more want lists than copies of Battle Cry of Freedom, Tunisia, or Modern Naval Battles: Global Warfare. Each non-wargame that trades does, in effect, make it harder for each wargame to trade.

For the compulsive trader, it doesn't particularly matter, because games are moving around. But for someone who really wants to trade off their wargames, it becomes an increasingly difficult proposition as more non-wargames enter the mix.
