Co-creator of the Dungeons & Dragons game, David L. Arneson, has passed away after a battle with cancer. He was 61.

Correction. It was found out late yesterday that he is actually quite ill, but still fighting for life. Please keep him in your prayers.

BGG Admin edit: Dave Arneson passed away April 7. Front pinned thread and updated subject.

A man whose praises have yet to be sung loudly enough. A true innovator and Role Playing's partner in crime. He will be missed.

My friends and I have just started playing D&D(4E) again after a couple of decades of rest. We're having a ball, just like the old days ... so many great memories and it's all down to Gary and Dave.

Thanks Guys.

I think I speak for all the BGG community when I wish deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Very sad news for his fans, and the passing of another gaming icon.

This may well be the darkest 24 hours long-time D&D fans have ever experienced.

Oh F*ck. What a crummy 13 months this has been for the RPG industry.

Gary in March 2008
Bob Bledsaw in April 2008.
N. Robin in July 2008.
Now David.

How very sad. With Gary, one of the legends of gaming. The two of them invented a completely new genre of gaming - how many designers can say that?

It's unlikely, given my schedule this week, but I really feel like rolling some dice and cracking the old D&D books. Maybe next week...

I'm very sad...a bit of my youth is gone now too

Did anyone ever interview Gary and Dave for a book?

The details of how they created D&D should be in a book

Keith "Doc" Herber of Call of Cthulhu fame passed away March 13, 2009. I just found out while browsing for confirmation on Arneson. Damn.

Along with Gygax & Wujcik, Mr. Arneson's work had a big impact on how I've spent much of my free time since 1985 (when I first cracked the red box). It's bittersweet seeing the RPG hobby outlive those primarily responsible for creating it.

While Dave Arneson is remembered most for his contributions to D&D, it's worth remembering that he's involved in a number of other games. Check the credits on Commands & Colors games, and you'll find Dave's name there.

Don't forget he was involved in miniatures games in the TSR days, for example: Don't Give Up the Ship

Damn. Thanks for the fun memories, David. Without Gary and David, I wouldn't have all those cherished times from my childhood (and adulthood, for that matter) of rolling dice and slaying dragons.

Very sad news. Even though I never was a big fan of D&D, any roleplayer (or former roleplayer like myself) owes him a lot of great memories. Thank you for the stories & and my thoughts go to his family and friends.

In addition to his pioneering work on D&D, a number of my colleagues know him as an educator in the computer game design program at Full Sail University.

I never knew you, but goodbye, Prof. Arneson.

Rob Kuntz just let me know that Dave wasn't doing well. At an early GenCon, I persuaded him to let me serialize "Don't Give Up the Ship" miniature rules for the International Wargamer. It took several free hot dogs, but it worked. He also gave us some very extensive lists of Napoleonic ships from various countries. He was intelligent, kind, courteous, and funny. He will be greatly missedsoblue

The reviews are mixed if it is worth reading. I know there is a a interview with Gygax. I'm not sure if they spoke to Arneson, but he's definately mentioned.

I used to play in Dave's D&D games when he lived in San Francisco back in 1985. Those were good times. It's sad news to hear he's passed.

Some years ago I was attending the Gencon auction when the Frank reminded everyone present that many of the creators of the games we know and love were getting up in years, encouraging us to seek out their autographs and listen to their stories while time was still left. I never got a chance to do this with Mr. Arneson, although I did manage to catch up to a few others.

You will be missed, Mr. Arneson.

His Wikipedia article is currently semi-protected because nobody there can find reliable reports of his death. The Talk page has some reporting that he hasn't died. Does anyone here have any verifiable sources on this?
