Hello,

I reside in Denver but this weekend at a family get together I got my sister hooked on Agricola. She's excited to get her feet wet in this hobby with her husband who is a strategy gamer from way back. Any advice on an FLGS I can send her to where she'll get some good customer service? It can be one of those more 'mall-like' stores where they also sell puzzles and educational games.

Thanks!

Dave

The Game Parlor in Chantilly (also Woodbridge but I've never been to that one) is very good. Lots of tables for gaming, big selection of a variety of games. I went there a lot when I was in the DC area, for gaming and shopping.

The one in Woodbridge had a bit of a slow start getting set up with their inventory when they first opened, but now the store is up mto speed and on par with the origional in Chantilly.

Both stores are top notch!

The Game Parlors are both great, but if they live in MD and not VA, then Dream Wizards may be the better choice. A great store with a really helpful staff and wide selection.

My girlfriend used to work at Barston's Child's Play in the Chevy Chase area (NW DC). It had a pretty great game selection for being a toy store. I spent a lot of money there on games. laugh

Where does she live? I'm in DC and Games Parlor (either location) is a real trek. If she's in the city (or in Bethesda/Friendship Heights/Chevy Chase/Silver Spring), Child's Play is probably her bet -- surprisingly good selection (e.g. they've had FITS when all the online stores were out of stock), knowledgeable staff, and they'll do special orders. Only drawback (especially if they're further away) is that they close early (generally by 7 pm) compared to a FLGS.

It has been years since I have been there - I live SE of Baltimore now and it's just to far to drive - but Dream Wizards on Rockville Pike at least used to be a very good FLGs.

If you are in DC it should be simple to get to. Just hop on the Metro.

Game Parlor: http://www.gameparlor.com/
Dream Wizards: http://www.dreamwizards.com/
Compleat Strategist: http://www.thecompleatstrategist.com/ {but may fail the customer service requirement and limited game play space}

That's the gamut I'm aware of from southwest to north. I'm not sure about the eastern side of DC.

There's also NoVa Comics & Games in Springfield, VA. It's in a shopping plaza located at the exit where the Beltway/I-495 meets I-95 (southwest of DC).

They got a copy of Agricola in on Friday. You can call them to reserve it if it's a convenient location.

They also have over 70 different titles of Euro-games.

Having just stopped in to Compleat Strategist last month and picking up Memoir '44 Campaign Book and Memoir '44 Med expansion, I can vouch for the improved level of customer service there versus where it was a couple of years ago. There's new management in place and it shows - the number of games, expansions, minis, and so forth is much improved, the store is cleaner, and the help much more friendly. I would now recommend stopping in at Compleat Strategist if you are near or passing by Falls Church.

Have they cleaned the place up? It was pretty bad a few years ago, new management is a good thing... It is a pretty convenient location.

Totally cleaned up. Also, another thing was apparent with the new management - the place had a load of people in it when I stopped in, a vast change from what it was like a few years back, when it was basically deserted. There was a group playing 40K when I stopped in last month. The back room is now stocked with Euros, while there's plenty of AT and wargaming goodness there as well.

I might have to stop by The Compleat Strategist then. I stopped going there long ago because, on the few times I did, I felt like I was inconveniencing the people who worked there.
And yeah, the place was a dump.

OT: Anybody remember when it was called Strategy & Fantasy World? That's where I used to go to get my D&D fix when I was in high school.
