The Great Fire of London 1666 is a game for 3-6 players by Richard Denning, based on the events of September 1666, when a large part of the city of London was destroyed by fire. It is currently in prototype form and visitors can take part in demonstration games, throughout the Saturday and Sunday opening hours of the UK Games Expo in Birmingham on 6/7 June 2009 (GREEN Zone - 12b).

In Great Fire, you are a wealthy landowner, with houses spread throughout the city. When fire breaks out you must take action to protect your investments, possibly at the expense of the other players, but there may be times when altruism is the better course as there is prestige to be gained purely from controlling the blaze and saving significant districts, even if it involves helping others.

At the start of the game the board is randomly set up with 20 houses in each of the 6 player colours, these will include neutrals if less than 6 are playing. Each player then receives a number of bonus cards, granting extra points for successfully protecting certain significant buildings and also for the protection of houses of a particular colour, which may be the player’s own. Then the player pawns and trained bands are placed on the board and the fire is ready to break out.

Game Start

Each player turn has three steps.

First the player will play a card to spread the fire. They will have some control over the direction of the spread, but a priority list requires that some damage be done if possible, even if it is to the current player.

Following the fire spread, they will have 4 actions from the following, including multiples of the same action.
1:Move their player pawn
2:Move one of the trained bands which can control the spread of the fire
3:Order trained bands to put out fire
4:Use a demolition charge to clear a region, creating a fire break

At the end of their turn, they will draw a card to replace the one played earlier, which may result in the fire intensifying in certain areas.

The game will last a set number of turns depending on the number of players and at the end players will score points depending on the number of their houses which have survived the fire, together with bonuses for those objectives achieved according to the cards received at the beginning of the game. There is also a bonus for the player who has put out the most fires during the game. The winner is the player with most points.

The pawn is required to be in the area where a demo charge is to be set, also it needs to be in the same area as a trained band that is to be put out a fire.
