This must be a Shogi-learning game for japanese children! Both the dropping of captured pieces and upgrade by flipping the chick is Shogi concepts! This was a very interesting one. I bet my 4-year-old would love it!

Bjørnar, you are specifically quite right. It was designed to be essentially "my first Shogi". I so badly want it. meeple

This is at the top of my want list too. I love regular shogi and I hope this will demystify it to get more people interested. Heck I'd love to buy a full shogi game with the same theme and iconography.

I believe I saw that she has a full shogi with that set of graphics. It was in the background of some photos I found. Although I quickly found どうぶつしょうぎ on Amazon, that same publisher doesn't have the full "animal" shogi. (They do have Agricola and Dominion, though!) I'll try to find the photo(s) that led me to believe there was a full version, too.

Hey- look at that in the background! Good eyes. That would be a cool set to have for sure.

There's a ton of photos at the game's main site:http://www.joshi-shogi.com/doubutsushogi/

It looks like they even have classes and let kids craft their own game set. Now that's classy!

Yes! Did you notice the sets in which the kid(s) rethemed the game?

This was the game I saw the most in Japan this December. It really was everywhere. Had I known people wanted it that bad I would have picked it up.

Just saw you review, Tom. Neat little video.
You're current rating for the game is '6'.

Does this mean that the game has lost favour with you, or did you always rate it at that?

I like games that I rate "6", I just don't love them.
