Leaving aside my obvious bias, I really don't think so. The different feel may be thanks to the additional cuts and folds that fit the game into the standard GMT box size.

I agree. The board is by no means flimsy. I also don't think the linen finish is distracting--my comparison is the Brass edition with the linen finish.

The cards have a slightly different tone of grey-blue (little darker) and a different finish on them than my 2nd ed. They slide easier than the 2nd ed cards but they have a sort-of linen finish "feel" (but not look) to them.

Hardly. In fact, one of the first comments from my friend Jonathan when he took the board out of the box was "Wow, this is even nicer than the Successors map."

The mounted map in the new edition of TS is one of the nicest ones I've had the pleasure of playing on in quite some time, and I say that despite my bias of TS being my favorite game.

Thanks for taking the time to do this review. As a counter clipper, those counters with the attachment points in the middle of the counter would drive me absolutely bonkers.

It helped convince me that I can live with my current copy.

You could just buy the upgrade kit. It doesn't come with counters, so you can continue to use your clipped ones.

There is a pdf file on GMT's website that has the three corrected cards. It is just a temporary fix until the cards are reprinted!

The first edition of Goa did have a linen finish, one of the most beautiful linen finishes of any game ever. The German board game manufactures know how to do it right.

The finish actually serves a useful purpose in making cards and components easier to handle and last longer. The Chinese linen finish is much less subtle and seems tacked on in order to make it look like a German made game rather than actually serving the intended purpose.

Recently I've noticed that while the Chinese finish is still far too pronounced it actually seems to be serving its intended purpose.

I'm willing to be convinced that there's light at the end of the tunnel.

Certainly a light finish is 10x preferable to a heavy one. No linen finish at all would be even better.

Great review.

two questions:

1. Do coup(s) from the new "Che" card count towards Mil ops?

2. Does the new "Our man in Tehran" allow a player to discard scoring cards?

1. They're not "free" coups, so yes.

2. Yup. Any cards.

Thanks for the quick (and helpful) reply!

A further question about this: if you succeed on the first coup and get a second coup, does that give you a further "three" towards your military ops, for a total of "six" on one card play?

I'll defer to Jason, but from my reading of it, you'd get potentially 6 milops for using this card.

Re: Deluxe Twilight Struggle: A Comprehensive Review
Note: They renumbered some of the cards in the 3rd edition. I noticed this while playing with the upgrade kit with the old markers/counters. The Formosan Resolution event marker had "101" printed on it (the old card number), but the latest version renumbered the card to "35." I'm not sure how many more cards it affects, but I found that a little annoying.

Re: Deluxe Twilight Struggle: A Comprehensive Review
Thanks for a great review of a great game.

I received my copy of the Deluxe edition yesterday. It's a mixed bag to me. I like the new hard mounted board. The "Man In Space", and Eagle/Bear boxes on the space track are just weird - although a couple return Apollo flights from the moon had a space walk. The full colour rulebook and quality sample game are very nice.

Not so good? The smell.... ugh, you get more China than the China Civil War variant in this box. The card errors ... but they'll be replaced so no big deal. But the "German style counters" are anything but. I guess I was expected nice rounded edges that just fell out of the sprues like a German game. You get rounded edges, but the attachment points are at the top and bottom of the counters and you are left with ugly flash or burr.

Overall, a nice reprint, but it isn't deluxe.

thanks for the great review!!

This review sold the game for me, went out and got a copy yesterday. Components look good. Rulebook is clear and concise. Just finished reading through it. The example of play really helps in clarifying the text. Really looking forward to sitting down and trying it out.

Is that written in the manual anywhere? I can't find where this is written...

Jason Matthews said it on the BGG forums. Basically that the cards were playtested as a single set without any other modifications to the game.

Thanks for your very useful review. I have a question for you: why do you suggest not use the Chinese Civil War variant with the new cards?

Our group think it's possibile to combine both.

thanks, Mauro

Although this is discussion has been dead for some time let me add that GMT is very helpful in providing replacement cards for the misprinted ones. They even shipped them over to Germany for free and in no time after I asked them about it in an email. No proof of purchase or anything needed. Great customer service!

I've read this review a couple times now as it's well written and an enthusiasm for the game shines through. Thanks Roger!

Great movie choices, too. I have them all at home, and I wonder if that might a little to do with why I've suddenly become interested in this game? whistle

One of the best reviews I've read of any game. Helps that it's one of my few "10" rated games.
