I wrote this yesterday, if anyone's interested; enter a bunch of BGG usernames and it queries the API, averages your game ratings, and suggests some games you should play against each other (along with some you shouldn't). It's been interesting to find some overlapping enthusiasms that hadn't ever come up in conversations, and to find out that I actually hate more games than most of my BGG friends.

It seemed like someone must have written something like this before, but I couldn't find anything.

Nice tool. However, it errors on names with an underscore.

Re: Tool for picking a game to play with other BGG users
When I run this, I get:

Suitable games

Steam: Ekted:9 Karmic_devil:6.5 Quarashi:9

Contested games

El Grande: Ekted:10 Karmic_devil:7.5 Quarashi:9

Seems like the formula is quite weak.

Looks like it was being thrown by the 7.5. The "contested" rating isn't very complicated, it's just the widest gap between the highest and lowest rating, but it should be okay now.

Re: Tool for picking a game to play with other BGG users
I like this a lot! Would love to see this feature in the new WhatToPlay tool.

Two things:
1) for tasajara, hannibalultor and garygarison, Medina came up as both suitable and contested.

2) I like that it tells you if the game needs more players and/or if no one has the game, but it would be also great if it told you who owns the games that were suitable.

EDIT: Also, users with a period in them also don't work.

Re: Tool for picking a game to play with other BGG users
"Suitable" and "contested" games aren't mutually exclusive - the suitable ones are the highest average, the contested ones are the biggest gap between high and low scores. It's quite easy to get a game on both.

I've added a list of game owners and fixed the period.

And thanks for the link to the WhatToPlay tool, I hadn't found that when I was looking for similar projects.

Interesting tool, found a small bug: if there are games with the same it mixes the scores up.Good example Janus(1547) and Janus(2616)

Yes, looks nice, but it also errors on usernames with spaces.

Multiple copies (ratings) of one user are rated that many times. So you would own 3 different copies of Carcassonne and rated them all as a 10, then the output is Username 10 Username 10 Username 10. An average for the same user would be better

This is a great tool! It very accurately picks that games that I already play with the people I game with regularly. I'll be sure to use this in the future.
Thanks!

Very useful. Can you add in a maximum playing time parameter, e.g. takes no longer than 90 minutes?

Hmm... it can't find my username "usagi-san"; apparently the hyphens don't get processed nicely.

Ah, it looks like BGG's "letters and numbers" restriction on usernames only applies to new accounts - they must have allowed stranger characters back in the day. Hyphens now fixed.

Great tool for me ! I would like to be able to add any "non BGG" games and allow the tool to pick games with the "right" number of players

Oups... What I wanted to say is that it would be cool to be able to add "non BGG" players

It looks like if you add non-existent usernames to the player list ("kevan courtjus dummy1 dummy2"), it counts them for purposes of player numbers.

One thing I added today was that if a player has left a BGG comment on the game, the page quotes a word from that comment, which you can hover over to see the entire text. (It previously just bolded the score, which wasn't very clear or intuitive.)

Re: Tool for picking a game to play with other BGG users
Is the webpage still working? When I try to use it a message appear

"Unexpected things happened:

boardgamegeek.com returned "Your request for this collection has been accepted and will be processed. Please try again later for access." for Jgoyes's profile.
boardgamegeek.com returned "Your request for this collection has been accepted and will be processed. Please try again later for access." for Juliancujabantev's profile.

We're not sure what this means. Try reloading the page"

I think this is due to some changes BGG did.

That's just what the boardgamegeek API is returning - if you try any http://boardgamegeek.com/xmlapi/collection/username URL direct, you'll sometimes get the same message. I imagine it's the API queueing requests when it gets too busy: calling it once prompts it to start fetching the data, and you have to call it again to actually see that data when it's ready - it looks like it can take a while for users with a lot of games.

Reloading the Board Game Selector after five or ten seconds seems to fix it. I'll get around to coding something to do the waiting and reloading automatically, if this is how the BGG API now works.
