Hello,
I'm vacationing with family for a week in Munich and a week in Vienna, starting June 12th. I've seen other threads on this board, and wondered if anyone had suggestions for game stores I should visit, or cafes / stores with open game nights I could stop by!
Thanks,
Patrick H.

I can recommend the spielebox. It's not a cafe or store but a public library for games instead of books. The atmosphere is relaxed and the staff is friendly and qualified. They have a gaming night on Fri June 13th, but the age limit is 16 and you'd have to register in advance: spielbox event page. Apart from gaming night spielebox has reasonable opening hours during the day, you can check on their web page, but it's in German only.
There's a community around web page Spieletest.at. They have monthly open game nights, the next one taking place on Sun June 20th. I've never attended it myself as Sunday is a bad gaming day for me. You'd need to register as well: Spieletest.at, but unfortunately as of now the page has not yet been cleared of the registrations for the last gaming night in May.
If you actually try one of my suggestions keep me posted about your experiences, please

Hey,
I'm not much into gaming clubs / cafes, but I can recommend two shops. At least one of them has regular gaming events, so you might want to email them and ask about it.
One is Spielerei
Phone: +43 / 1 / 523 64 34
Email: office@spielerei.at
Location:
Mariahilferstraße 88a
1070 Wien
Google Maps
This shop focuses on board games, RPGs and miniatures
EDIT: Has since closed.
The other is Damage unlimited
Phone: +43 / 1 / 587 90 81
Email: office@damage-town.com
Location:
Theobaldgasse 20
1060 Wien
Google Maps
It's the geekier of the two, with a lot of fantasy / sci-fi books, comics and live role playing costumes and accessories, but also a board game room.
Both shops are pretty close to each other, on or near Vienna's biggest shopping street. If you are there, get some ice cream from Paolo Bortolotti, it's one of Vienna's finest!

The only shops in Vienna besides Damage unlimited and Spielerei I can recommend are:
Müller
Mariahilfer Straße 97
1070 Wien
http://www.qype.com/place/158259-mueller-Wien
It has rather large gaming section (compared to other supermarkets) with some standard eurogames and a little more. It's 100m close to Spielerei, so you can check them both in no time.
The only other store worth a visit in vienna would be:
Kober
Graben 14-15
1010 Wien
http://www.qype.at/place/preview/at-6462-josef-kober-wien
It's near St. Stephen's Cathedral along the (rather expensive) shopping mile "Graben". It offers tons of toys and some eurogames. If I would have to get a present for a kid, I would go there. They have everything.
Munich will offer you more in terms of shopping for games. I can recommend to check these places:
Obletter (vast selection of eurogames)
Games-In (nice FLGS with cosims, ameritrash and eurogames)
The inner city of Munich is stuffed with department stores which also offer many boardgames. Check out the gaming sections in these shops:
Karstadt
Galeria Kaufhauf
Müller
Hugendubel
I once spent half a day checking all these place in Munich and was pretty overwhelmed. Vienna is nothing compared to Munich. Unfortunately

In addition to the two named specialty games stores (Spielerei and Damage) there is also the Planet Harry at Otto Bauer Strasse 19.
http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgameexpansion/40834/dominion-i...
All three shops are well stocked with boardgames if a little pricey, but the great thing is they are within easy walking distance from each other, check out the addresses on google maps and you´ll see what I mean.
Regarding gatherings...
there is a Family Afternoon at the Games museum about 20 miles from Vienna on the 12th. The Games Museum is a huge collection of games with friendly owners but wont provide opponents.
On the 15th and 17th there will be meetings of about 20-40 gamers (perhaps less because of the soccer thing) at the Cafe Goldengel. You can inquire about that meetings with office@spielen.at (in english) or by pm to me.
Have fun

Previous posters already listed the most important FLGSs (there are more, but you won't be able to visit them all, anyway, and those listed are easy to reach).
There's a number of gaming cafes, again most importantly:
Brot & Spiele (bread and games)
8th district, Laudongasse 8
http://www.brot-spiele.co.at/
30 seconds from tramway 5 or bus 13A, Laudongasse stop
Nicely maintained game stock.
No doors between smoking and non-smoking area.
Café Sperlhof
2nd district, Große Sperlgasse 41
no homepage
5 minutes from metro U2, Taborstrasse station
Huge stock of games, not all in playable condition.
Old-style viennese cafe, some say shabby, some say cozy.
Owned&run by Mr. Sommer, who's considered part of the fixtures.
No smoking in entire premises.
Cafe Benno
8th district, Alser Straße 67
http://kh-mediendesign.at/cafebenno/html/start/index.html
5 minutes from metro U6, Alser Straße station
Limited selection of games.
Good food.
Not been there in a long time
There are also some specialized cafes for billards, go, chess, TCGs, etc.
If you're interested in any of those, please ask specifically.
As for regular meetings, there's a social network site (groops.at, maybe groups.at was taken) with a number of active gaming groups:
http://www.groops.at/kartenspiel-freunde
http://www.groops.at/brett-spiele-treff
http://www.groops.at/nette-leute-schwarz-weiss-gelb-od-getup...
http://www.groops.at/wargaming-in-wien
Every monday there's a game designer meetup at Brot und Spiele (19-24h, or longer)
The SpieleKreisWien meets every second week (even calendar weeks) on tuesday and thursday 18:00h at
Cafe Goldengel,
3rd district, Erdbergstraße 27
www.goldengel.at
5 minutes from metro U3, Rochusgasse Station
Registration needed (office@spielen.at).
Many recent games available (sometimes even pre-distribution).

- Oh, I'm glad I spotted this thread. I will also be in Vienna for a week (in July). I had already planned to find the game shops, but it hadn't occurred to me to also look for gaming groups. That could be a really unique experience!

Wow, thanks everyone for all the suggestions! I'll have plenty of things to check out when I get there. Much appreciated!

- I can recommend the above mentioned Spielekreis (Erdbergstrasse 27, 1030 Wien) as they always have the latest games (sometimes even before release!).

Be sure to visit:
PLANET HARRY Hinterbuchinger KG
Otto-Bauer-Gasse 19/1
A-1060 Wien
AUSTRIA
It´s a sideway to the Mariahilferstrasse, the main shopping mile in Vienna.
It´s a nice little shop with lots of different games in stock. Also it is mostly cheaper than Damage Unlimited or Spielerei.

I tend to buy lots of used games and also order some online.
As for a FLGS, I can also recommend Planet Harry (mentioned above). Prices vary, but I've been positively surprised several times by quite competitive prices (sometimes cheaper than amazon.at, for example).
