Ok boys and girls, it's time for the war game math trade again.

The list is here:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/55689/2010-summer-war-...
The Request List:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/55707/summer-2010-war-...

A quick summary of the rules:

sauronOpen world wide
sauronNo minimum shipping requirements (please state)
sauronFor every 1 war game item, you are allowed to post 1 non-war game item.
sauronGift Cert's are above and beyond both, so you can simply post 100 gift certs and nothing else if you want.
sauronSweeteners can be ANYTHING (legal anyways).
sauronStarts Sunday 13, closes Friday 18th, want lists done by monday night following (21). Results ASAP.

That is all.

They're really not. I've gotten people to list many things (and subsequently received them) using a request list - even rare things like the Civilization Eastern Expansion Map.

Strangely (for me) I actually have some war games to trade (what can I say - not a war gamer). If they don't trade in the high value leftovers trade that's going on, I can actually join in this one.

I was thrilled for this math trade. Although The Devil's Horsemen and Omaha Beachhead went in the Small Things math trade, I do have a copy of Battle Cry for this one if there might be interest.

Well... OK... Not at all sure how that could have been taken personally - I guess I'll just sit this one out then... shake

It does when you look at what it actually sells for - and how long it takes to sell. As I won the game, that gave me the nudge I needed.

Two questions:

Is it just me, or do a lot of Math Traders have thin skins?

And

Does Tom Stearns/gohrns realize that he may be shipping games to a different person than he is receiving games from?

So, if I win one of gohrns games, I will pay shipping to him AND I will pay shipping for the game I send to whoever wins the game I put up for trade? That doesn't make any sense. By the time I pay double shipping, I might as well just go buy a game at the store. So, I just won't add any of gohrn's games to my want list....

I thought his shipping policy is very interesting. I'm almost tempted to adopt that policy myself.

When I first read this policy, I thought that this was just a variation on "mirror shipping" except that, instead of using the same shipping policies that the person you ship to used for what they shipped out, you potentially punish a third party who ships for free just because you're unwilling to figure potential shipping costs when making your own want lists, and instead get someone else to pay your shipping costs for you.

I personally dislike mirror shipping, but at least the point of mirror shipping is to try and make people be more generous in their own shipping policies, whereas this is just plain cheap...

But after a second reading, it seems even worse. If it's not accidentally misstated in the entry, if they get charged $5 excess shipping for something they win, and you get their item, you get charged $10. Nice way to make a profit.

I don't envy the moderator the decision of how to handle this (it's always hard to deal with new situations once the event it open, so please respect any decision the moderator makes in either direction).

FWIW, I'll be modifying my template rules for the future math trades I run to specifically prohibit such a policy in future.

I can't out right say no to it, as I left an open shipping policy rules, however, In the future, I will make rules against it.

I will say this however. If you feel like not trading with him because your worried, don't. I see nothing he has offered for myself, so... no biggie. However, some one else might want what he's got. It's your personal call on your desire for his merchandise. It's not to bad of a policy, just runs into a whole bunch of 'what ifs' and I don't like that. Like I said, it's technically not against the rules, and I see nothing overtly 'exploitive' of it, but In the future, mirror shipping, is out!

I read the policy as, "Shipping costs $X. However, if the item I receive has free shipping, then I will ship this with no cost to you."

Basically, he's saying, "Factor in $X as your cost, but I might feel generous and not charge you shipping." He's just explicitly outlining the terms of his generosity.

I didn't read into it that you might have to pay even more than the stated shipping cost in any circumstance, but I guess it all comes down to how you interpret "that" in "I will ask that shipping cost be covered by receiver." (I think it would be "that that" if he was passing costs along to the receiver.).

Of course, I could be mistaken... it would be nice for him to clarify things himself.

I'm surprised at the negative reaction of the moderators to this shipping policy. I guess he just worded it wrong.

I agree that, if worded properly, it's slightly better than a policy that doesn't cover any shipping.

However, it's also a policy with interesting scenarios. Particularly, what happens if everyone in the trade chain has an identical shipping policy? In that case, no one knows whether or not they are receiving free shipping until someone starts shipping. A most curious (albeit unlikely) scenario.

Due to this edge case, I think I'm going to refer to this type of shipping as a "Prisoner's Dilemma Shipping Policy" (after the famous game theoretic (Iterated?) Prisoner's Dilemma problem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner%27s_dilemma).).

There seem to be a lot of disadvantageous shipping policies in this MT - I was pretty excited by the prospect of this list, but many of the items won't be on my want list because I don't want to pay the $15 - $20 to ship my items out, then also have to pay the same amount to have my items shipped in - that doubles the additional "cost" of the game.

most people offer to pay 10-15 dollars, for the most part that should cover the full cost to anywhere in the USA, or most of the cost to Canada. I think your a little over-worried.

I don't like 'variable'. It should more be about 'what I can do' not 'what i get'

Depends on how they decide to ship to Canada. If they insist on using priority flat rate $15 is only about 1/2 the cost. (I've been burned by this one before) If it's 1st Class International then you're probably right.

Since I'm shipping to Canada\USA for free so I'm not adding any items that will force me to pay for any amount of shipping.

Too bad that means I've automatically excluded 95% of the items.
