Looking at the Gamers in Japan thread, it looks like there are gamers all over the country. It gave me the idea to make a list of gaming groups by region. Since I live in Tokyo, I'll list the ones I've been to here. Please feel free to add Tokyo groups you've been to or start a thread of your region!

Group: JIGG
Website: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/guild/1103
Meeting dates: Second and last Sunday of the month
Upcoming dates: 9/26 (no official statement but that's the last Sunday of this month)
Location: Ayase (second Sunday) and Castle Tintagel, Mejiro (last Sunday of the month)
Member demographic: Mainly foreigners (when I went last month, about 15 people)
Fee: 500 yen

Over the next few months, I wanna visit some Japanese gaming groups that I found through Google and this site(http://kubotaya.client.jp/game_circle.html). Here are the groups I've visited so far.

Group: Fukurokouji 袋小路
Website: http://gorakudo.hp.infoseek.co.jp/
Meeting dates: Monthly (no fixed day)
Upcoming dates: 9/26
Location: Teikyo Heisei University, Ikebukuro
Member demographic: Japanese (no one spoke English from what I saw); there were about 50 gamers there divided among 8 tables or so.
Fee: 200 yen (snacks provided)

Group: J☆P Convention
Website: http://www.trpg.net/circle/jp/con/con_h.html
Meeting dates: Monthly (no fixed day)
Upcoming dates: 10/10
Location: Tama Kyouiku Center, Tachikawa
Member demographic: Mainly Japanese; the room is split into 4 sections - board game, pencil & paper RPG (Lodoss War) and Warhammer 40K (2 tables)
Fee: 400 yen

I visited this group once:
http://atog2.cocolog-nifty.com/blog/
It's a Japanese language only group, and they specialize in train games (mainly 18xx).

Is that a club? I always assumed that it was an initiative by the shop.
I think I played games there maybe 3 or 4 times. Last time was a few weeks ago with BGG users (and Chitchatters) Zorazen and Nazureth.
(Foreigners appeared to be rare at these occasions by the way. Asside from me, and the visitors to Tokyo with whom I was playing (a) game(s), I haven't seen any, but as mentioned, I'm not exactly a regular.)

That SNK club sounds like a lot of fun but I unfortunately can't go since I'm a salary man and my 定時 is 17:00. Last week, I did visit なかよし村とゲームの木, which was great -- especially since I live in Baba so it's super convenient!!

So here are a couple more.

Group: Boardwalk Community
Website: http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~rp9h-tkhs/nittei.htm
Meeting dates: Monthly (usually second Sunday of the month)
Upcoming dates: 9/12, 10/10
Time: 13:00 to 21:00
Location: Seems to alternate between Kachidoki and Tsukuda
Member demographic: Japanese; there were about 20 gamers
Fee: 500 yen (snacks provided), but there's an initial membership fee of 1000 yen

Group: JAGA
Website: http://homepage.mac.com/jaga_online/index2_event_renraku.htm...
Meeting dates: Monthly
Upcoming dates: 9/25, 10/23, 11/20, 12/18
Time: 13:00 to 20:00
Location: Meguro Kumin Center
Member demographic: Japanese; there were about 35 gamers
Fee: 600 yen, but there's an initial membership fee of 1000 yen

For Fukurokoji and Boardwalk Community, I mentioned that snacks were provided but I believe these snacks weren't funded by the club. Rather, the extremely generous Kusaba-san brought them (or at least some of them). What a great guy!!

So I visited the SNK club last week. I had mixed feelings about it. First, it took a long time for any game to get started. Then, it seemed that people weren't as open and welcome as people from other clubs. On the plus side, it seems like they're into both new games and obscure/old games. I got to watch a little bit of Merchant of Venus, a game I'd heard about but never actually seen in person.

Today, I visited the Edogawa club and I'm very impressed. Very friendly, very open and they seem to play all types of games. By the way, they seem to have a site here:
http://blog.goo.ne.jp/ebc2008

Actually, after I left Yellow Submarine (when I went to SNK), I went to the gaming store Role & Roll, which is around the corner of YS. I saw that they also host a monthly club. Although I haven't been, here's the info.

Group: Role & Roll boardgame club (not the official name)
Website: http://www.arclight.co.jp/r_r_s/03_event.html
Meeting dates: Seemingly monthly
Upcoming dates: 9/18
Time: 11:30 to 21:00
Location: Akihabara Role & Roll Station
Member demographic: Japanese (?)
Fee: 500 yen for members, 800 yen for non-members. Reservations required. 25 person limit.

As a side note, it seems that R&R also had a card game event today for Tanto Cuore and other Arclight games.

Sounds interesting. If you end up going to one of the Role & Role meetings, let me know if they are English friendly. I live in Yokohama and have been trying everything to get some gaming in with others in the area!

Group: Suginami Board Game Dokokai 杉並ボードゲーム同好会
Website: http://www2.ttcn.ne.jp/~suginami-bgc/reikaiannai.htm
Meeting dates: Monthly
Upcoming dates: 10/10, 10/11
Time: 9:00 to 21:00

Although this group seems to emphasize war games, they also had Puerto Rico and a few train games on hand.

I'll see if I can make it out to this month's meeting and check it out. Any gaming group can rent one of their tables for a day so even if you can't join a Japanese group, you can rent a table if you wrangle enough English speakers! If you do, lemme know and I'll try to join!

I checked out yesterday's game day at Role & Roll. Being a gaming shop, they have access to pretty new games. I played a game of Constantinopolis and it was pretty fun.

Having said that, I hate to break it to you that no one there speaks English so you'll have to get by with Japanese if you go...

I and my boyfriend visited Yellow Submarine in late September. We contacted Joe Yamasaki who helped us find our way. We had a great deal of fun - they taught us a couple of Japanese games we hadn't tried before. They seem to play mostly German-style games. They helped us pick up a game from the store as well, as the only Japanese games we know are Fairy Tale and Fire in the Sky.

Afterwards, we went to a Chinese restaurant in Akihabara, which did pretty good Chinese food (although I can only compare it with Chinese cuisine in Sweden, which isn't very Chinese and rarely good).

Hi, guys. I live in Higashikurume on the Seibu-Ikebukuro line. I've been hosting a small game group at my house with some friends for a while now, and I'm considering expanding the group. The thinking is that I will rent out a space in a local community center once a month. The time would be from around 13:00 - 22:00 one Saturday per month. I don't know what the fee would be but it wouldn't be much (if any).

I'm doing this to meet more people and play more games than we currently have. This group would be open to the public, both Japanese and foreigners, and would be advertised (such as it may be) around the area here.

You can browse my profile to see the types of games I would bring. In my current group only I and one other guy bring games and can lead them, so I would definitely be in need of others who can bring and lead games of their own!

At this point, I just want to see if any of you would be interested in coming out this way on occasion. You can reply or send me a private mail.

Corey
