The game this article refers to has been played at Iggamecenter. Neither of the players claims to have deeper insights into Armenian Checkers. Yet, it shows some important aspects.

1. c3-d4 b6-a5 2. b3-a4 a7-b6 3. a2-b3 g6-h5 4. g3-h4

Since Armenian Checkers allows diagonal movement, both players can take the edge immediately, as they did on the right side. 4. ... f6-e5 5. d2-c3 h7-g6 6. d3-e4 c6-d5 7. e2-d3 g7-f6 8. f3-f4 f6-g5 9. b3-b4 d7-c6 10. b4-b5 A blunder 10. ... a5xc5 11. f2-f3 e7-f6 12. g2-g3 g6-f5 13. h2-g2 f7-g6 14. c2-b3 c6-b5

The critical position. Black's last move looks like a mistake because White can play d3-c4 now. However, analysing the position with the applet from checkersland.com showed that this line is good for Black. 15. d3-c4 d5xd3 16. c4xc6xc8

16. ... d6-c5 17. c8xc4 b5-b4 18. b3xb5 b6xb4xd4 19. e4xc4 d3xb3xb1 20. c4-d5 e5xc5 21. a3-b3 b1xb4xg4 22. h4xf4
Both sides got a king and lost it, but Black is three men up now.

Can't White do any better?

Returning to the critical position, the applet came up with: 15. f3-g4 f5xf3 16. g2-f2 Clearing f3 for the following sacrifice 16. ... f3xf1 17. d3-c4 d5xd3xf3 18. c4xc6xc8

White gets a king while Black is still forced to capture. 18. ... e5xe3 19. g3-f4 g5xg3 20. f4-e5 e6xe4 21. c3-d3 e3xc3

Can you correctly count the number of captures White can and must do now?
22. c8xc1xg1xg5xa5xa7xg7xg3xe3xe6xc6xa6

Ladies and gentlemen, eleven is the correct answer. Armenian Checkers features immediate removal of captured pieces, just like its cousin Turkish Checkers. Without immediate removal, there would have been nine captures only.

For me the game exemplifies the strong and the weak sides of Armenian Checkers. Compared with Turkish Checkers, the extra mobility allows both players to form a block of three men on both edges immediately. This may make opening play more limited. On the other hand, the extra mobility adds more options and makes the tactics even sharper.

In general, the open back row common to both Checkers variants is not only a burden, but also a tool with which one can even give the opponent a king to his own detriment, as it happened in the first line.

The second line shows tactics without par. The idea to break open a position by sacrifices which are ín turn exploited by a hungry king appears in Checkers games all over the world. Programs with brute force search are particularly good at it. I guess it takes a life time of learning for a human. However, finding a line like this and working out the last capture is something I will not learn anymore. The combination of maximum capture with immediate removal is too much. Even without immediate removal, it is intrinsically difficult.

Спасибо за интересный материал. Но, к сожалению правила игры не все верные.

I am not sure what you mean about the game not being true.

Maybe it refers to something that one can find on several Russian sites, including wikipedia. There, it is claimed that removal is not immediate, but it is supposed to be the way it is in International Checkers. Given that information on Armenian Checkers is scant, some people possibly believe it.

However, Armenian Checkers is obviously similar to Turkish Checkers which is known to feature immediate removal. And I have asked an Armenian player who says that Armenian Checkers is played with immediate removal.
