In early February I'll be traveling to the Netherlands for a couple days of meetings. Though I'll be flying into Amsterdam I believe I'll be staying & working in Noordwijk. I understand that's a seaside vacation town, so I don't expect there are good game shops there. However, it may be easy enough for me to get to nearby Leiden. Might there be a good store to buy games there?

If the Netherlands are anything like my experiences in Germany, it wouldn't need to be a dedicated GAME store. When I was in Munich I noticed that department stores (e.g. Galerie) had a decent selection, and sometimes great sales in some items. Is there a V&D in Leiden, and would that possible work for me?

Item for Geeklist "Game Stores in The Netherlands - please rate & add!"

The best shop for boardgames is the Vliegershop; it's between the train station and the city center.

There's also a V&D. I'm not familiar with the one in Leiden, but most V&D's have a reasonably large selection, but aimed at non-gamers. You won't find anything heavier than Agricola or Axis & Allies.

(And if you have a free Wednesday evening and want to game, game club Phoenix has a weekly game night in Leiden.)

Hi Mark,

In my experience the game shelves in department stores such as V&D have taken a backward step in recent years. There's little of interest for gamers apart from the Catan and Carcassonne products.
At least that's the case in the V&D in my hometown, maybe Leiden is better...

There is also a specialized game store:
Games and Toys
Agatha van Alkemadestraat 1
2331 EG Leiden
tel: 071-8880060

I took the address from this site: http://www.spellengek.nl/winkels.html
There are also game stores in Den Haag and Hoofddorp, which are also near Noordwijk.

As for Noordwijk itself, it's good for a walk on the beach (bring a thick coat, it'll be cold and windy this time of year). But shopping for games, I don't think so.

Have a good trip.

Marcel

The quality of the game section at V&D is very variable. And in some stores, they sometimes have some very good discounts. There was one V&D here in The Hague where you could buy the Blue Moon expansions for 3, and later even for 1 euro. The V&D Leiden is right in the city center, so it's probably worth to just check it out.

According to Google Streetview, this does not look like a shop; it's probably the address of an online gamestore. You can't visit it.

You're correct, they have multiple sites:

The games section at V&D in Leiden is not very interesting.

Vliegershop is your best bet. There is also a very small store called Warp 9 that caters mostly to the Magic crowd and has some boardgames, RPG and miniature games (including some Monsterpocalypse).

Did you know Leiden is home to Splotter spellen?

Thanks. I may end up checking them both out.

No, I didn't. Thanks for the tip.

As for visiting the city, I read on Wikitravel (http://wikitravel.org/en/Leiden) that the best thing to do would be to drive to the transferium (A44 exit 8) and park for free, then taking a bus in to the city center. Does that sound right?

As for games, I'm just looking to be looking, but also to buy a few things if they're a good deal. When I was in Munich recently I saw some Queen games I'd buy (e.g. Samarkand), but I didn't have the space in my luggage. Now, I should. I'll be on the lookout for that again, as well as Sobek and Tikal II.

Games in The Netherlands are not as cheap as in Germany, and also usually harder to find. In Germany you will find decent games in any warehouse, while over here you have to find an FLGS

But then again, in my own city (which is Utrecht now) there's 3 within 100 metres...

I think so. Or you can take the bus all the way from Noordwijk to Leiden; that takes about 30 minutes. It's probably best to ask the local people at ESTEC. (I assume that that's where you're going, seeing that you're a rocket scientist.)

You might also want to check out "Spellenhuis" in Den Haag (20 minutes by train from Leiden).

Address: zoutmanstraat 94

They have a good selection of the latest releases and a pretty decent selection of games in English.

De Oudegracht in Utrecht is like THE FLGS hotspot in the whole of Netherlands.

They've got pretty extensive collections for sale there. Much much better than my own local FLGS in Haarlem; Het Spellenhuis (which also has a store in The Hague)

Thanks again for the hospitality! I've recently posted a podcast where I talk about my time in Europe, including your wonderful game group. Though I mistakenly call you Phil in my podcast! blush I'm sorry, Eugene!

No problem, it's not the first time I've been called that here.

Interesting story, by the way! I'm glad you enjoyed the game night
