My parents are visiting Krakow in August and am just wondering if anyone could recommend some Polish board games that I can ask them to bring back for me? I'm looking for games that have not been released in English/German and are (almost!) language independent as I don't speak Polish.

So far I have found:

Mali Powstańcy: Warszawa 1944 and Liberator

Any more I should be aware of? Also would be good to know of any stores where games can be picked up from. Cheers!

You may find the list of hobby stores in Poland under this link: http://www.gamesfanatic.pl/gdzie-kupic/.

Personally, I haven't played any Polish games so I can't give any specific recommendations, but take a look at this GeekList: [geeklist=36724][/geeklist].

As far as I know there is one of the biggest online/offline stores in Cracow called BARD.

The surely speak english, so consider e-mailing them and ask about such games.

Oh, there is one polish game that has not been published abroad with Polish, English and Czech rules included (I own it), language independent - fast and fun: 303
You should try it! Bard should have it. If not, PM me and I'll try to locate another Cracow gameshop.

Best,
Andrzej.

Thanks! Exactly the type of game I've been thinking of! I just hope Bard will have a more portable version than this:

That was kind of a show or something The game is very compact and wooden dice with RAF/PAF/Luftwaffe markings make rolling very climatic.
The game itself is fairly balanced!
Best,
Andrzej.

I definitely recommend Mali Powstancy. I have also heard really good things about Magnum Sal (based on Wieliczka salt mines near Krakow. In fact, your parents may even visit there on their trip - highly worthwhile visit!). Next on my wishlist is also K2 which seems to have an intuitive mountain climbing game mechanic.

There is definitely a good game shop in Krakow but I cannot remember the name nor street. Once my girlfriend gets back, I'll ask her (She is from Krakow) and I'll post again.

So, girlfriend consulted; the recommendation is as Andrzej has already made - [geekurl=http://www.bard.pl/?act=show&cId=imprezy&sId=i_krakow&l=pl]Bard[/geekurl]. She tells me that you go through a gate and cross a courtyard, so it may be worth advising your parents that they might not see it easily from the street. Apparently the courtyard has tables and chairs in the summer for gaming outside - nice! cool

Edit: In fact, they have two stores. One in the centre and one in a shopping centre further out. I am referring to the central one. It may even be worth ordering with them online and then just asking your parents to collect from them to minimise hassle.

This list may be helpful for ideas [geeklist=http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/15811/item/288449#item...]Polish games[/geeklist]

I don't think it has some of the newer games on it but it's a starter.

I've been to the main Bard and it's very good - but it is quite out of the way, as Ben said above, through a courtyard and off the main street. It's also quite a walk from the main square - probably better to take the tram. Friendly, English speaking staff though.

There's a shop in Kazimierz Galeria but, at least when I was there, it was more a mid-mall shopping stall rather than a unit-ed shop (if that makes sense?)

Given your microbadge you may want to grab Zombiaki, it's cheap and card sized so easy for your parents to bring back

Ok, so you want to have some polish boardgames, directly from source. Nice!

I would also recommend shop [geekurl=http://www.dragonus.pl/index.php]Dragonus[/geekurl]. Thay have station shop near Main Station (railway) and a both in Galeria Krakowska (which is also near Main Station, to be precise, it is a part of Main Station).
Shop from Galeria Kazimierz, mentioned in previous post, is called [geekurl=http://www.sklepsmok.pl/]Smok[/geekurl]. Main shop is internet enterprise. Their both in Galeria Kaziemirz is located few minutes from Kazimierz (former jewish district) - [geekurl=http://www.galeriakazimierz.pl/sklep,179,sklep_smok.html]Smok w Galerii[/geekurl].

Games to consider:
Magnum Sal - must have, good eurogame
Mali Powstańcy: Warszawa 1944 - this is a good choice
Zombiaki - some language dependence
K2 - very good game
Super Farmer - classic polish boardgame from II WW (could you believe it!)
Tàin

Hope you parents enjoy their stay in Kraków!

Also, if you are willing to use google translate, you can use this site - http://www.i-szop.pl/ to check and compare prices in Poland. I don't give you guarantee how this site looks after translate though.

Arrived back from Krakow today.

Found Bard (with some difficulty). Staff were extremely friendly and were aware of BGG. The shop is quite small and geared up for Magic and Warhammer type gaming, though there was a reasonable selection of board games in a corner, leaning towards big-box thematic games. Many Polish-language versions of familiar titles, as you'd expect.

I asked about recent Polish designed titles (I already have a few) and their expansions, but they had none of the ones mentioned above in stock.

Another disappointment, for an FLGS, there was no way to pick up and look at any of the boxes, as they are all the other side of the counter, and so prices are also not visible.

Great to see the outdoor gaming area - in use as we arrived.

Is Bard still around? I tried looking it up on Google Maps but only found two locations marked "Permanently Closed"

Don`t know about the physical store, but when I visited Krakow in September I got in touch with them to send an order to my hotel and they were very helpful. They speak English so you should drop them an e-mail.

I emailed both Dragonus and Bard about a particular title I was after. Dragonus wrote back quickly and confirmed they had one in stock. I walked to their shop & promptly got it.
