So, I'm about 90% done with a combined rulebook for Battlelore- I've been playing a bit more lately, and rifling through all the various manuals for the expansions got annoying. To this end (and to brush up my DTP skills for an upcoming project), I fired up InDesign and got to work.

What I ended up with is a ~70 page .pdf, mostly copy-and-pasted from the rule books Fantasy Flight freely makes available on their site. Most of their .pdfs are wonderful, allowing copying of text and images, all very well-formatted.

I tried to combine all the rules into various appropriate sections, color-coding them according to specific expansions. So all the rules for Heroes are marked in purple, with the rules for setting up Heroes going in the setup section, Hero ordering going in the ordering section, etc.

The last couple chapters are a combined unit and creature reference, every one in the game up to this point. I pretty much own every expansion at this point (except for the overpriced Creatures one- I have the old promos, and it seemed absurd to pay $35 for one creature).

I've tried to make it pretty, using the various background images and fonts from the BL main rulebooks, but I left out pretty much all the examples, card breakdowns, etc.- this is intended to strictly a rules reference with no extra fluff, not a teaching aid.

Is there interest here in such a document? I'm loath to post it in the files section before it is done, but I'd like a few more sets of eyes looking at it before I send it off. Like I said, it is 90% done- I still have to add some images (there's some I didn't have easy access to, and need to clip out of other things or scan in), and I'd like to go through whatever FAQs and threads I can find to clarify the rules as written by FF/DoW. I can either make the .pdf (with or without background images) available, or the working .indd files. Anyone have any idea where the best place to post something like this is? Currently it is pretty small (less than 1Mb). Images might add a little, but not too much.

EDIT:Ok, to make it easy to find these things, I've copied the working links from my post at the end of this thread. I've moved everything to a personal (public) dropbox account. These links should last forever.

I, for one, appreciate the heck out of this... I enjoy Battlelore a lot & look forward to having a workable rulebook!

This would be great and would encourage me to add more elements from the different expansions. Thanks in advance for the hard work!

Justin,

If you're still looking for a set of eyes to help you out I'd be glad to do that.

Something I hoped to do was make something like this with all the revised rules we've seen lately. I do not have the graphics skills to make it more than word processing file so this is great!

I don't know if you are familiar with a couple of other documents that were made a while back - the Card Compendium and Creatures Compendium. Those are great documents that answered a lot of FAQ's that would be nice to include with what you're doing if you're interested.

I will send you a geek mail - I'd love to help in any way I can if you'd like it!

I broke my rulebooks apart and put them in a 3 ring binder. I've put all the rules in one section, with the scenarios in a separate section.

A combined rulebook would be nice, though you'd have to add to it and adapt it each time a new supplement is released.

This sounds like an awesome project - one I've sort of squinted at and gone nah not enough time or software needed to rip them all apart let alone look pretty so thank you for your time

Happy to help out if it's still needed (geekmail already sent)

Thanks for all the great responses, everyone. Doing a bit of tweaking- I'll have download links up later today.

Deefer: Those are great, too (I love his stuff), but those are stripped-down essences of the rules. If you want to look up the actual rules as fully written when you might have an ambiguous question, having actual rulebooks is handy.

That was quick. Rapidshare seems to have streamlined their interface since the last time I used them (years ago).

1.16 MB file, without background images- still contains some quite a few images/color:

2.9 MB File, with background images:

Let me know what y'all think. The last two sections have to be gussied up (banners, unit icons, etc.) somewhat. You'll get the gist of it, though.

I wasn't as well-organized when I started the project last week as I wanted to be, so I didn't put most of the images on a seperate layer, so it'd be mildly annoying to take the rest of them out right now. I *could* take the colored boxes out easily, though, and just leave the text underneath black, or color the text to the box color (that was how I did it in the first draft, but wanted something a bit different).

EDIT:Erased the links, in favor of updated ones eslewhere in the thread.

This looks great!

I do have a suggestion but it may take some work if the info is not readily available...

I know most veterans know exactly in which expansion they can find a given rule (and your color coding is excellent), a type of terrain, a specific type of unit or a creature. However, adding sources may be useful to someone new to the game. New players could know more easily in which expansion they may find a given specialist or terrain type they discover reading this file... It may be more elegant in table form as an appendix.

EDIT: A summary inspired by this file could also be useful. It shows which sets are required for each official scenario. Battlelore Scenario Tracker

Keep up the good work.

I also went for the larger version and a quick scan. Certainly worth the cost of a print out in colour which must be a fraction of the cost of the time you put into it.

Thanks Justine

I just checked again, and yes, the links do work. The main rapidshare page loads, and after a quick second, it redirects to the file page.

As I said in the original post, they'll get uploaded here when they're finished. I don't feel like going the through the whole submit-wait-version-resubmit-wait song-and-dance.

Justin,

I've gone through your compilation and you've done a fantastic job

I like that you've basically cut & paste from the rule books so the familiarity of what's been produced is in place. I also really like the color coding - that's awesome!

The only thing I could not find were the creature rules - I know you have them within each creature but possibly you could include the intro pages from the updated rule book?

I have those old card & creature compendiums (.pdf format) as well if you're interested in including those. At any rate, you've already done some great work that I very much appreciate

Very well done. The only thing that I would add after purusing this quickly (and correct me if I just overlooked it) was the absence of the "new" battle back rules. (i.e. that just about every surviving unit can battle back).

I'm pretty sure he has that in there (if you're referring to Battle Savvy) under Combat pg 23-24

Ok. Here they are. These are the rules, as written by FFG/DoW. Everything laid out as best I could, organized, marked-up and prettified. The last few sections in particular are much better looking, but I cleaned up all the other graphics, too.

These files are at 99%. I'm pretty much missing just a few minor graphics for weapon/Banner icons for a few things I didn't have pictures to properly clip things out of. Ditto for a couple creature lairs.

To respond to some questions, Creature and Battle Savvy rules are in, in the appropriate sections. I could color the creature rules like I did the others- with green, or grey perhaps.

There's a few things I'd still like to do. 1)I'd like to go through FAQs and forum threads to re-word all ambiguous questions. 2)I'd like to add an Official/unofficial variants section. 3) David made mention of some card/Creature compendiums. I had a look around, and couldn't find them. If Someone could give me a link so I could have a look to see how they'd fit I that'd be swell.

Any other ideas?

Unless people have anything that needs fixing, I'll be finding a way to scan those last few things in and uploading them to the 'geek within the next few days.

Without Background images- (around 2 Mb)

With Background Images (around 4 Mb)

EDIT: Deleted the links in favor of updated ones elsewhere in the thread.

Justin,

Again, great work and thanks for sharing it

The website I got the Compendiums from (battleloremaster.com) is missing those files now. I can email them to you if you want to geek mail your email address to me. The files are about 3.5-4.0mb in pdf format.
